How early did you know your child was left-handed?

Just that really! My 13 month old always picks food up with her left hand but wondering if it’s determined this early.

Pretty much as soon as they started picking things up. Food, crayons etc always with left hand. They are both left handed now

TobiasForgesContactLense · 23/03/2024 19:33

I am left handed and DH is right handed so I was on the lookout from day 1 to see whose side DS was on.😉It was certainly clear by 15 months that he was left handed through picking up food, toys etc.

Halloweenrainbow · 23/03/2024 19:36

It might change. One of mine preferred the left hand right up until about age 5 when they moved over to the right. I think seeing the other kids at school using the other hand made her to try and she preferred it - I dont believe there was any prompting from teachers. Firmly right handed now age 8.

Very early. She favoured her left from a baby.

anicecuppateaa · 23/03/2024 19:41

Very early. I thought it might change but at nearly 4, ds is definitely a leftie.

Kitkat1523 · 23/03/2024 19:42

By around 13 to 14 months …I’m left handed ….2 of my 3 children are and 1 of my GD

Lovelynames123 · 23/03/2024 19:43

Very early, her dad should have probably been left handed but is of the age where it was discouraged, he writes, badly, with his right hand but favours his left for sport. I feel like it seems to be a much more even split these days, certainly almost half my staff are lefties

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 23/03/2024 19:44

By 1 I was pretty sure. It’s a good thing though for children to develop handedness early - it’s a problem developmentally if they haven’t by the time they start school.

Talkinpeace · 23/03/2024 19:47

Child 1 was clearly right handed from 3 months

Child 2 was ambidextrous until age 5

My baby book shows I was left handed before I could crawl

Roseinbloom20 · 23/03/2024 19:49

My nearly 4 year old is definitely a leftie and we thought he was from about 2 years old as he was a bit ambidextrous until then. It's not surprising really as both my dad and brother are left handed so he takes after them. So far it's not been an issue, he is actually very into colouring and drawing and he keeps in the lines when colouring in more than some kids who are right handed and older than him and he's very patient when it comes to anything that requires using your hands like Lego, train tracks or building toys.

bruffin · 23/03/2024 19:51

Dd burnt her left hand badly and needed a skin graft when she was 2. She was definitely a lefty by then.
She couldnt use her hand for about a month, so used her right ok, but as soon as cast and bandages cane off she went back to her left hand again

Vettrianofan · 23/03/2024 21:29

I have three right handed, one left handed. The left handed child was ambidextrous until aged 5. Switched to left hand at school.

Mathsbabe · 23/03/2024 22:20

DS always used his left hand to reach for the toys when he was 4 or 5 months old.

nomorespaghetti · 23/03/2024 22:22

From about 6 months. She’s 8 now. Her dad is also a leftie

HerRoyalNotness · 23/03/2024 22:25

Only when he started writing. He only writes LH, everything else is RH 🤷🏽‍♀️

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 23/03/2024 22:28

As soon as she could hold objects. If I handed something to her right hand she'd switch it to her left hand. Some kids it's more ambiguous, but with DD it was very clear from the time she was a baby that she was left handed.

ETA: if they do end up being left handed tell the teacher when they start school. It didn't occur to me too and DD who's always anxious to fit in was copying everyone else and writing and cutting right handed. I was confused when the teacher said her writing and cutting were messy.

Weirdaf1 · 23/03/2024 22:31

From about six months. I'm right handed and put dd's spoon to the right of her bowl when she started feeding herself and she always switched it to her left.

KnitFastDieWarm · 23/03/2024 23:20

I knew mine was left-handed from about five months. Health visitor and GP insisted babies don’t show handedness that early, but DC was clearly a leftie and still is nearly a decade later.

murasaki · 23/03/2024 23:26

Dad tells me I was less than 6 months old, but then he's a leftie too, so may have been looking out for it. The sisters were clearly right handed by about the same age though apparently, so I reckon he's probably remembering correctly.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 23/03/2024 23:28

Can recall our kids but grandkids, from about 4/5 months - their feet/leg took longer to certain if left or right footed.

I'm left handed as well as 3 of my 3 siblings. All three of our children are lfet hand as are 2 of our 4 grandkids.

hellsBells246 · 23/03/2024 23:32

Very early! He favoured his left hand and foot. Still strongly left handed now at 17.

mathanxiety · 23/03/2024 23:54

As soon as she started picking up food with her left hand, so around six months. She never used her right hand to feed herself.

Violetandgreen · 23/03/2024 23:58

13 months

LorlieS · 24/03/2024 00:00

I'm a leftie, as is my mum and FIL. All three of mine are right-handed.
