Going insane. Dd is nearly 6 weeks, had what we thought was a milk allergy just like her older sister, showing all the same signs from a couple of days after birth. She is formula fed.
So we got in there early and made the switch to Neocate syneo, Initially she got better, the rash on her face went away in a day or so, she seemed more settled, less windy and poo not smelling foul, her poo was just soft not like milkshake anymore, Her reflux didn't get better but I put that down to the Neocate being so thin, so we now use carobel which seems to help a little.

But now a rash has come back, it's only slight and very small spots but definitely there, it's around her neck and shoulder, all over her tummy.
She is struggling with trapped wind and reflux, her poos initially went a khaki colour, then went back to yellow with the seeds in, now it's just like a liquid, so diarreah I'm guessing. She isn't going much, once every couple of days, but I'm concerned it's now gone so loose, the last poo her nappy was saturated like they are when full of wees but it was brown...

Wtf is going on? Can babies be allergic to Neocate ?? Or carobel??

It's the carobel op. Stop putting it in the wee ones feeds.

CherryBlossom100 · 23/03/2024 20:10

Could be allergic to coconut? Maybe ask for a different formula from gp. Could also be a reaction to the carobel. Might need some gaviscon prescribed too? Sometimes takes a while to settle. Big hugs. I'm 16 months in with my twin boys now who have multiple allergies.

I've read carobel is from a legume which is what soya is from isn't it ? And babies with cmpa very likely to react to soya aswell. So is it that ??
She was on gaviscon but it didn't do anything hence trying carobel which is helping with her reflux. I really don't want her to have to go on omeprazole it seems too harsh for a little belly

Is coconut in Neocate syneo?

Soya does cause a reaction in babies who have cmpa. My son was on omeprazole briefly while we waited for the reflux to subside. It might be worth seeing a gp and asking for another formula to try? My son was on nutramigen, smells horrendous but he was fine on it.

Dogsandbabies · 23/03/2024 20:21

My baby is now 8 months. He is allergic to milk and soya. Which is common, so it could be the soya. He also did not get on at all with Neocate or Nutramigen. He settled well eventually with Aptamil Pepti 1 and some baby gaviscon.

crumblingschools · 23/03/2024 20:21

DS was on nutramigen but that was from 6 months and about 20 years ago

Dogsandbabies · 23/03/2024 20:23

I should also add it took some time. In the beginning he got terrible constipation with the Pepti but after a couple of weeks he settled well. So you may need to persevere a bit to make sure it isn't just the baby's gut getting used to the new formula.

TheNines · 23/03/2024 20:25

Some babies do react to soya as well. Mine had severe cmpa but were fine on the sma soya from a few weeks old and one from 4 days old. They wouldn’t tolerate neocate etc but the sma soya was thicker and stayed down

clanga · 23/03/2024 20:26

Sorry should've said we went on pepti 1before the Neocate and dd was in so much pain still so we knew she needed dairy free, I just don't know how she is reacting still!! I'm thinking it really could be the carobel which is so annoying !

OP posts:
clanga · 23/03/2024 20:28

The only thing the pepti 1 did was clear up the rash on her face, but now two weeks later on necoate the rash is back but has spread to other areas ! And we've been using carobel since she started Neocate...

Both of mine had reflux (until they were 2!) and CMPA.

It’s so hard when they are this small as everything upsets their tummies. As a pp said, it can take a while for their tummies to settle so it might be a case of allowing them time to adjust before making another change. Carobel also causes constipation which you may need to balance with something else (our paediatrician gave us several options).

Mine did well on Nutramigen Puramino (not the regular Nutramigen as that isn’t completely dairy free). With carobel and omeprazole (one of mine was on omeprazole from 2 weeks so it is safe from very early on).

I also gave them a baby probiotic suitable from birth to help support their gut.

clanga · 23/03/2024 20:36

Thanks everyone. I'm confused now though as what to do about the carobel? Should i just leave her on it a while longer and see if the reaction (if it is that) gets worse ? I don't want to have to swap her back onto gaviscon or different formulas due to as has been mentioned, her being so small and still having an immature digestive system
It really is so hard
I just want her to be comfortable

Alwaystired2023 · 23/03/2024 20:36

Is it nutramigen that has the least allegens? Do they give you pepti 1 then neocate and then nutramigen? Awful spelling sorry but my point is there is another formula (probably lots!) with less allergens, so I would be asking for that and yes agree re soya. CMPA babies also more likely to react to beef and tomato's (more relevant for breastmilk but how bizarre right)

Could you afford a few sessions of baby cranial osteo or similar to see if any digestive issues caused by them being a bit out of balance?

Massive solidarity baby allergies are just a nightmare, seeing your little one not settled and no easy answer to quickly resolve - but hopefully you will get there soon!

Alwaystired2023 · 23/03/2024 20:39

Oh sorry and what's that other reflux medicine - my mind is blank - ozempraole ? That helped my one alongside all the allergy sorting out etc and didn't seem to impact her reactions

It’s really, really hard to know - especially as it’s so upsetting seeing them uncomfortable. I completely empathise with you right now.

It’s really hard for us to give you advice online. Is your GP supportive? Or do you have a paediatrician? I got a paediatrician privately (I’m in ROI) as I felt like I needed someone to hold my hand through the process. She specialised in reflux and CMPA so she seemed to know exactly what we should do and we just followed what she said. So if that’s an option, I’d recommend that.

Alwaystired2023 · 23/03/2024 20:44

Omeprazole 🤣 mine sounds like some sort of mix between the popular weight loss drug and being on parole

Autumn1990 · 23/03/2024 21:08

My second had neocate lcp and she couldn’t tolerate the less broken down formula that my first could. I was bf as well.
We had the carobel but didn’t really get on with it, it didn’t cause any specific problems. Just used to sit for an hour after every feed holding a baby upright.
if they got quite a bit of inflammation from dairy it can take a few weeks for the gut to settle again.

clanga · 23/03/2024 21:10

Doesn't nutramigen still contain dairy though like pepti 1?
She's had a feed about 30 mins ago and is still squirming around and crying out every now and then

I really would've expected the Neocate to have helped by now
Can reflux still be bad even if on dairy free formula ??

Didn’t want to read and run as know how hard CMPA can be on top of postpartum recovery. From my experience with my LO, Neocate LCP worked wonders for the gastro issues (and stopped the rashes) but the spit up remained as it was until she got onto solids and grew out of it. I’m not sure how different Syneo is to LCP though. You are right in that Carobel can cause issues and discomfort for babies, due to the legume it contains. Another option which you can buy online is called Picot Magic Mix. It’s a French brand that some babies do better on. You don’t need a prescription for it. We didn’t need it in the end, we did try omeprazole but my daughter didn’t like it at all.
I would recommend looking at babyrefluxlady on IG, and also for reflux Alison Scott Wright has some really good advice in her book (and online too, but dedicates a whole chapter in the book on reflux). Other PP’s advice on probiotic is also worth exploring, we used BioGaia drops.
I also didn’t really shake the bottles up a lot when making it as it added extra bubbles (not great for gassy babies!) so would gently mix the formula and water with a sterile knife or spoon. Hope it gets better soon ❤️.
