I'm losing my mind all he does is cry, hes never settled and if hes happy its only short lived and hes back to crying again. I can not do anything, i cant even wash the dishes and have him in the bouncer next to me without him screaming he's picked up again and then he screams because hes been picked up. All day every day. He hates his car seat, the pram, lieing down, propped up, hates the bumbo, bouncer, you name it, he hates it. Ive carried him in a sling but it killed my back and shoulders im only 5ft and hes 14lbs at last weigh in. He has got reflux ( unmedicated) he's mix fed breast and cow and gate reflux but thats bunging him up little so i will switch to carobel and stage 1. I went dairy free for 5 weeks didn't make a difference to him so ruled out cmpa.

I dont know what to do its awful every single day is miserable. Hv are rubbish they reccomended i put him in nursary now for a break. Tried leaving him to cry that doesn't work. The drs told me it learnt behavour and its basicaly my fault.

I cant keep this up. Has anyone had a baby like this! What can i do?

When you removed dairy did you also remove soya? Half of children are allergic to both. My daughter was like this and actually she has 20 food allergies and when I look through my early food diaries I was eating around 3 allergies a meal! It's no surprise that she cried for 16-20h a day!

Were you combi feeding whilst trialling the dairy free diet if so what formula did they prescribe? Babies that react to breastmilk more frequently need an amino acid formula which is fully dairy free.

My daughter has reflux that is independent from her food allergies and she needed the highest dose of omperazole, as much gaviscon as I could get in her, lactulose for the constipation and domperidone to manage her reflux. We were able to drop the lactulose after a couple of months but she is still on the omperazole, gaviscon and domperidone combination aged 3.5!

If he has reflux I would really recommend getting that treated. My DD is the first one of my 4 to have reflux. She's 4 months and it's hard her to take the omeprazole, but it makes such a difference to her comfort and sleep, which then generally affects how cheerful she is. I'm hoping it clears up in a few months ☝

I'm sorry, that sounds so tough. I don't really have any experience with reflux but is he getting enough sleep? My 4 month old screams like he's in pain when he's overtired.

Tiger in the tree pose? That helped my non-stop crying refluxers. Also probiotics for some reason, from ProVen. They have specific breastfeeding ones.

Sorry its been a rough few days, with his reflux hes been on gavisgon and omeprazole and both made him worse, he had side effects of both meds when we tried them. The dietitian took us off the meds and he improved as in he screamed less but the reflux was still awful, the dietitian said there isn't anymore meds to try.

I'm mix feeding and since ive been adding carobel and he's eating 3 meals a day he is hardly sick at all. He's just never happy, I'm starting to think its just who he is, he just wants holding all day everyday while that would be lovely, i have another child and a busy rural lifestyle and i need to out him down.

As for sleep, he's dreadful most nights we have a good bed time routine and he's put down to sleep before he goes over tired he will sleep till 7-12 which is great but then hes either waking every 2hrs after or up for 2 or 3 hrs at a time.

I've just started him on probiottics so will give them ago, anything is worth a try!

The poor little thing, and poor you as well. You need a referral to a paediatrician urgently, this isn't at all fair on him or you and they can suggest other treatments for his reflux.

Superscientist · 25/03/2024 08:10

What side effects did he have on omperazole? Omperazole makes reflux worse before it gets better as you have something called an acid battle where the body produces more acid in response to the medication saying make less.
Dieticians aren't qualified to make medication decisions they can offer their opinion but it's should be GPs or ideally paediatricians that make the call. My daughter needed the top dose of 3mg/kg of omperazole as well as 9 doses of gaviscon and then domperidone too.

If they still aren't happy to me it says either the reflux isn't being managed or that there is a dairy allergy at play too.

whatamess100 · 25/03/2024 19:12

I went dairy free for 4 and abit weeks it made no difference at all.

I just dont get it, I feel like something isn't right with him, this can't be normal baby behaviour.
Ive been in tears this evening because no matter whatI've done today hes just cryed and he will not be put down, not even for a second! I've had him in the sling which kills my neck and shoulders but I've had to do it but I'm still one handed there's only so much you can do with him in it, every time i sat down he started again. It cant be normal to never go in a bouncer, playmat changing mat, lie on the sofa, sit on my knee and just cry ! The only time hes ok is if hes held. The drs said it could be learned behaviour so maybe I've held him too much early on, i try to leave him to cry but that doesn't do anything its like he can't self soothe.

So sorry you're going through this. My DS was the exact same, it was utter hell. What I will say is things massively improved around the 6 month mark and the reflux subsided quite a lot from when we started weaning

toddlermam · 25/03/2024 19:58

Also the doctor say it's learnt behaviour is absolutely ridiculous. This is a tiny baby ffs, do not listen to that doctor!

whatamess100 · 25/03/2024 20:38

I know, what a thing to say! I'm quite a straight talking person so i said ...right,so your saying it's my fault! The Hv have also been useless.

I think i may go bk to the drs and try omeprazole again, he obviously bigger now so maybe he can tolerate it abit better.
