What to use after pram?

My 2 and a half year old DD has started hating the pram and is also near the maximum weight limit. My question is, around what age should you stop using the pram and what do you use instead of the pram? She has reins but she also hates walking too far as she gets tired, I've been looking at trikes/buggy boards but I'm not sure what's safest for her as I wouldn't trust her not to escape a buggy board!

Any advice/experience appreciated.

A lightweight stroller perhaps?

Or if she hates the idea of buggy what about putting her in one of those backpacks for toddlers?

It depends what you use the pram for. A day trip to a massive zoo is a bit different to walking a quarter of a mile to the local park, which is again different to keeping them safe in a crowded shopping area or near busy roads.

Ditch it for the small stuff, and use it for the longer days.

A light weight "buggy" pushchair.
I had one that was the umbrella fold style and when folded I could actually hang it over my arm like a brolly.
Although do you have a younger child - as you mentioned buggy board?

Thanks everyone. I do have a 1 yo who still uses the double pram and we are expecting another in June. We do have a single pram we could use for the 1 yo in the meantime before DC3 is born in june

We didn't use a buggy after age 2.5, he just walked or sometimes used the scooter. But it sounds you'll have 3 under 3 so I would just use a buggy board. The advantages of stopping using the buggy is that some places are more accessible, eg stairs, but that won't be the case if you'll have a double buggy anyway. Sometimes I'd have to pull mine along on a scooter, or run after him to stop him going too far ahead, but that might be tricky while pushing a huge pram.

I think you will have to go down the buggy board route as you will have 2 other little ones.
Also get a sling so you can swap newborn to the sling if eldest wants to sit for a while.

I had a sling that I used up to the age of about 3.5 years. Easier to carry around instead of a buggy if it wasn't in use.

I used a Baby Jogger pushchair and a ring sling at that age.

I would just get a buggy board for the double in your senario. Then 2 year old can use board and be put in pram when tired.

My son is almost 4. We don’t use buggy day to day, but still own one and I will take on long days out or when travelling. It’s handy if your travelling at super early or late times, and can be used as luggage donkey if child walks

Trike with push along handle, there's some good ones that convert into a bike when she's ready

A buggy board sounds worth a try in your situation.

A balance bike or scooter can be good for extending their range and increasing their speed, but when you've got a buggy as well, it depends how safe the child is, whether you'd need to run after them, etc. DD1 went on her balance bike at about 2.5 with her baby sister in the pram, but she was reliable in listening when I said to stop, etc. DD2 went on her scooter at 18 months – I had her wear her rucksack at the beginning so I could use the loop on the top as a grab handle if I needed to stop her, but that's not a great deal of fun when pushing a buggy as well.

It's definitely a skill worth developing, riding something safely out and about, but it depends hugely on your child at what age it can be a regular mode of transport.
