Is this a bad plan?

Hello,

I've been wondering about nappies for a newborn. Is this a terrible plan:

I buy about 10 second-hand nappies now, a couple each of the various kinds that people recommend for newborns (diddy diapers, little lambs, bimbles, swaddlebees size 0 etc). I then see how i get on over the first couple of days, with DH frantically scouring second-hand forums to buy some more of the ones we are most successful with?

Would that work, or is 10 going to be far too hectic, especially over the first couple of days? Also, am I likely to get responses quickly enough? I just don't want to buy 20 of anything if it turns out that 80% don't work for us....

Thanks.

A newborn will easily get through 10 in 24 hours so would involve a lot of washing

If you want to hang fire and see which nappies work best for you then either get some disposibles too until you work out what you want to buy or just get down to mothercare and buy a cheap pack of terry squares to fill in the gaps.

Or a coupls of packs of muslins to pad fold with x small wraps. I would prob go with one of each type of nappy you are thinking of and 20 muslins and you would have the wraps in anyway for the two parters you would be using

do you have a nappy library near you where you could loan different types to see which works best?

Muslins were our hometime favourite as they dried so quick and we kept the shaped ones for going out. Kissaluvs were my favourite shaped nappy and proraps were bomb proof and they'll all be out again in November .

You could get one or two of each of the ones that you are interested in and use disposables aswell. I used disposables for the first two weeks, then some of each and now dd is 4 weeks I'm using bumgenius in the day and disposables at night. I will be using fluffles at night when I get a big enough sleep suit! I would use disposables at first as it'll be one less thing to worry about + might be easier if LO is on the small side. 10 definately not enough!!

I also had terries and still use them on my 2 year old and also for cleaning. get some of those nappy nippa things so you don't have to bother with pins. All my size o's are with other babies now or i'd gladly have sent them to you!
if you want eco disposables Moltex are good. they will send you samples too. Just google the name and get to their website.

Sounds like far too much of a rush to me. Far too much washing to keep up and you'll probably end up making a poor decision if you just base your nappy choice on what you experience with a newborn.

I would maybe go down the terry square route for a while if you want to be cloth from day 1 then when you are more settled either go for your plan or find out if you can hire a trial kit from your local nappy project (you can find them here. Our kits cost £10 for a month and have about 20 different nappy types to try out in your own time and you get lots of free advice thrown in too - you should have something similar locally to you)
