How much do you spend for a DC bday gift if they invite you to a party?

Have a 6yo bday party next week, this is our first as DS is small and donnt have many friends yet.
What’s expected from a present perspective? Don’t want to overdo it or look too stingy. Is £10 a good budget??

About £10 if a whole class party. Might spend £15-20 if it was a close friend/small party.

Hermittrismegistus · 18/03/2024 15:41

Between £5-£10.

LauderSyme · 18/03/2024 15:42

I was going to say exactly the same! £10 is fine. I sometimes spend up to £15, counting the card and wrapping paper.

For DS's bestie we spend up to £35.

Sammilouwho · 18/03/2024 15:45

I put £10 in a card, if I can get a present for £5 that's great.
I tend to buy little things when I see them (the Lego sets from game which are between £6/7 are great for this age)

TheChosenTwo · 18/03/2024 15:48

£10 either on a present or in a card for them when they were younger and they were bigger parties but now ds (the youngest) is 12 and it’s more of a close friends sort of thing rather than a party so I do £20 in a card for about 4/5 boys during the year.

DinDinDin · 18/03/2024 15:48

It's a friend, not super close but a friend. It will be a big party in a rented room for the morning with all her school friend, I expect there will be 20+ DC attending. I have bought a gift for £9.99 (set of arts and crafts stuff) + card, is this enough?

£5 - £10 for a classmate or £10-£15 for a best friend.

Lots of people in our area would pop £5 and some stickers in the card and a bag of sweets for whole class parties. I used to buy things in bulk or the 2 for £15 toys from Argos. I guess it depends on how affluent the parents within the class are, we live in an area of disadvantage so a £5 was very generous, be just as careful not to over gift as to under gift

Singleandproud · 18/03/2024 15:49

@DinDinDin that sounds perfect.
Unless the recipients family is of the personalised "Thank you" note type it's likely by the time the presents are opened they won't have a clue who gave what.

ConstantastheNorthernStar · 18/03/2024 15:51

@DinDinDin perfect. Anything bigger would be a bit embarrassing, actually.

DinDinDin · 18/03/2024 15:51

@Singleandproud nah they are not, very down to earth too, I know they won't care but I just wanted to do the right thing :)

@ConstantastheNorthernStar yes that's what I thought too, didn't want to over do it! She already has everything and more

For a small party (few friends) I'd spend £10- £15, for a village hall type party probably around £7.

Yes sounds perfect.

£10 max, fiver if I can get a way with it!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/03/2024 16:07

I echo £10 for a friend - £15-£20 for a close friend.

ButterflyTable · 18/03/2024 16:07

Generally £10-£15 close friend £20

More than enough. When mine were younger I used to buy stuff like that in the sales and just have a few popular or art things ready in a drawer. I rarely paid more than a fiver for things that would have been 15-20 initially.
