7 months old baby threw up after trying meat

Hi all, DS is 7 months old and has been eating solids for a month without much problem, though mainly mashed veg and fruit and oats etc. we tried giving him meat for the first time today, pork mince pressure cooked with edamame beans and chopped tomatoes, no salt, very soft in texture. He had one teaspoon and threw up 30 seconds later, like proper vomitting, not just spitting up. But no other symptoms afterwards so far. Anyone had similar experience please? Shall I try again tomorrow or hold off giving him meat? Thanks!

Was it his first try of edamame maybe?

katerose2022 · 14/03/2024 20:50

@StarsandStones yes it was. Could he be allergic to it? But no other symptoms so far

Was it the meat or the edamame beans? Has he had tomato before? My dgc is allergic to soya and will vomit within minutes of having even a trace of soy/ soya beans. I’d think the beans may be a problem unless he’s eaten them previously

It’s rare that any meat is an allergen unless the animal has been fed particular allergens

katerose2022 · 14/03/2024 20:54

@Mum2jenny thanks! good point. No he hasn't had tomatoes before either. Maybe I should try a bit soya milk tmr and see what happens. And then tomatoes separately too.

Tomato can be very acidic - maybe it was that? And pork mince can be very fatty!

I'd try again with plain chicken, then offer the other things individually.

InTheRainOnATrain · 14/03/2024 20:56

Could be coincidence, the texture, the edamame, possibly the meat but I’d not think that massively likely.

I’d probably retry something easy to digest and plainer like chicken pureed with sweet potato and see how he goes with that.

katerose2022 · 14/03/2024 20:58

@SableGrape @InTheRainOnATrain thanks! I used lean pork mince but I guess the combination could be a bit too much for him. Will park pork and try chicken instead!

Our pediatrician ( abroad) taught us to introduce 1 new food at a time, so it would be easy to spot any problems.
I wouldn't worry about this time, but in future I'd do it slowly, so 1 new food mixed with tried and tested foods, and gradually add things in. So from 6 to 7 months we'd add chicken, turkey, plaice with potatoes, pasta, bread, and plain vegetables then 7-8 lamb, beef and other fish more vegetables, 9+tomatoes, stronger flavours etc

My gcs is very allergic to soya and dairy so I am very aware of these issues

Cdoc · 14/03/2024 22:34

My LO has issues with some textures and mince is one of the textures he vomits on, proper projectile and then he’s absolutely fine and tries to carry on eating. I think it’s quite a difficult texture to tolerate!

Thanks! That's a really good approach. We've been doing single foods for a month and thought he could handle multiple foods now but apparently not.

Thanks! Could be the same here... if DS doesn't show allergy to soya milk I'll probably try mashing up the minces a bit more and see

I agree around one new food at a time. It’s the best way to eliminate any allergies and if you want to do multiple foods, then use foods previously given, adding one new food at a time.

Ozanj · 14/03/2024 23:04

Pork, Tomatoes and endame beans are all allergens. Try them seperately (ask your GP if they’re willing to let you try in the surgery as a second exposure could be more serious).

mitogoshi · 14/03/2024 23:12

@iverpickle

In the USA they are really into single foods.

I don't think that's necessary but I wouldn't introduce beans and meat at the same time. It could also just be the gag reflext because it wasn't something they are used to

Librarybooker · 14/03/2024 23:13

Our DC older teen and I’m pretty sure any meat was 8 months plus recomm back when he was little. I was basically giving veg only with a bit of porridge at this point. Definitely try foods sep.

It could turn out to be nothing. Our DC wasn’t a sicky baby but did once throw up massively at around 8 months. I did all the usual things to try and figure out what it was. It never happened again.
