She is now on neocate syneo and in so much pains either reflux tonight, we was using carobel to begin with but switched back to gaviscon which is doing fuck all. I want to switch back to carobel as she was more settled with it.
Am I okay to use carobel in the next bottle ? It says online never to use concomitantly but I don't know if this means together in the same bottle or if it's okay to use the same day

I would go back to your doctor and ask for omeprazole.

Tel12 · 14/03/2024 18:49

Phone 111 and ask their advice. Hope you get settled soon

Although it's an amino based formula, suitable for [[https://www.allergyuk.org/about-allergy/allergy-in-childhood/cows-milk-allergy/ babies with CMPA, it does contain Rapeseed Oil and sometimes Coconut Oil both of which she could be reacting to. Has she been referred to the Allergy Clinic and a Paediatric Dietician?

I agree with ringing 111 and filming a feed to show the Dr just how distressed she is.

She has settled now. She has seemed extra hungry, maybe it's that as silly as it sounds. But I just thought it was because of the reflux she was wanting more to soothe the pain.
I don't know if it's because it's thin? Dd1 has cmpa too and was on this formula, it was less than a year ago she went onto it and I don't remember her struggling with it to be honest .
She has been referred to the dietician so I'm just waiting for that to come through.
Dd1 is still under a dietician so I might ask her advice in the meantime also.

Yes the amino acid formulas are thin and often need thickening or omperazole alongside as they trigger reflux
You can only use one thickener per bottle but over the course of the day you could use different thickeners. There is also magic mix and thick'n'easy if you don't get on with gaviscon or carobel but I think you probably want to be looking at a ppi such as omperazole or lansoprazole too. The thickeners aren't enough for moderate and worse reflux

They might get on better with one of the other amino acid formulas. My daughter has a coconut allergy so could only have alfamino

Thank you for this.
She's seeing the gp this afternoon with a view to starting omeprazole. She's refusing her feeds today, she wants them and will snatch the teat into her mouth as babies do but once she starts drinking she pulls a face and doesn't want it.
She's been on it since Sunday now so I don't get why she would suddenly refuse ?
I know it's tastes rank but I didn't think it bothered babies this young ?

Have you tried adding alcohol free vanilla essence to make it more palatable?

We had to do this with my toddler but she was a little older. Is it okay to do this for a month old baby ?

It might help but the reaction might due to the reflux. It's exactly how my daughter fed because of reflux and she was breastfeed. Feed for 5 seconds pull off and scream like I was feeding her poison.
I have seen lots of people being recommended it even with small babies but obviously check with a health care professional if you are unsure

I'm thinking if the formula is thickened it'll stay down more and therefore prevent the reflux ?

She has actual tears in her eyes it's so sad I feel terrible for her

I was referring to the vanilla in my post. I apologise I didn't actually put it in. It's been a long week

Yes that is the theory but even thickened liquids can be refluxed....even thick pureed veg at weaning can be refluxed so I find it a bit perplexing that medics have the opinion that its a magic cure. But then I have also had a gastro paediatrician tell me that omperazole stops you producing any acid at all. Which is well very wrong and would be harmful as acid is a necessary part of how we digest food. It makes you produce less acid but that is a far cry from no acid. My job is in the pharmaceutical industry so I was able to query her but I wonder how many parents she has told this too and taken it as golden as it's come from a consultant

Thickening liquids will help but it makes it harder to reflux but they can still be refluxed.

I had this with my son , he went through all the milks and neocate was the worst we also were on omeprazole. He ended up having clear liquid smelled like vinegar so acid coming out of his mouth and silent reflux. Hardly slept and when he did was grunting and balling his fists up. Seemed in pain alot. We ended up going to a and e a few times because he was crying. Then whilst still on neocate, omeprazole he barely refused to drink it . I also used carobel. We had a sympathetic health visitor and I got her to phone paeds unit at hospital and we went straight there. They monitored him overnight and consultant was initially dismissive the usual wait it out and was going to switch us on to a different amino acid formula.
In the end she switched to lansoprazole and we decided to try kendamil goats milk. Within a week we had a happy baby. We still used carobel to thicken and weaned approx 5 mths. I hope this helps. Also the reflux lady book helped along with reading published articles on pubmed on GERD/gord so the GP and consultants weren't as dismissive. Good luck ☺️

Synchron1 · 15/03/2024 20:40

Also to add I was concerned about using PPI 's because they lower the stomach acid and that's not great either. We tapered the dose to the least amount needed to be effective and gradually weaned off when able. As we needed him out of pain and able to eat. I really think the kendamil goats milk helped alot. More expensive but worth it when you look at ingredients in formula milk in comparison

Imisscoffee2021 · 15/03/2024 21:07

Omeprazole all the way. Takes the pain away from the reflux, my baby has been on it since a month old and went from being a miserable, crying or screeching and whimpering boy to a happy one so quickly, then being on a cmpa formula stopped the reflux itself eventually.

elm26 · 15/03/2024 23:01

Omeprazole and carobel were/still are life savers when it came to DD. She's 9 months now and still on omeprazole and I still thicken her milk with carobel. DD also has CMPA.

vacay · 16/03/2024 02:09

Thanks everyone.
She's been taking more throughout the day but still not going mad for a bottle like she's normally would. Or she will give off feeding cues, then once she has the bottle will suckle for a few seconds, pull a face and not want the rest.
I don't get it, she was taking it fine for 5 days !
She is so hard to wind aswell, always has been but been worse since being on the Neocate.
Another thing, I thought reflux was a symptom of cmpa so why is she still having reflux now she's on dairy free ?

I've decided to try the carobel first, I want to see if it will help before going down the omeprazole route, it just seems so medicinal as she's so tiny still. Of course if it doesn't help then omeprazole will be the last resort but I do want to try it first

Reflux can be a symptom of cmpa but you can have it as well as cmpa.
My daughter has severe reflux despite all her allergies being removed and stable. Reflux causes us bigger problem than any of her allergies. Still heavily medicated at 3!
