Fluoride coating

Hi all

I stay in Scotland if this makes a difference.

My 2 year old (2yrs 5m) is very afraid of the dentist. Ever since they brought out a puppet with giant teeth to make him less afraid ( 🤦🏼‍♀️ ) it's gotten worse. He's hysterical just walking into the waiting room.

At the last appointment I said let's leave it a while (they were trying every month to get him used to it but the upset was only getting worse each time). We tried everything and brought favourite teddies to appointments to get their teeth checked too. So I said he needs a break from this and when he's a little older/understands more we can try again. They're going to get back in touch in 6 months to try again. They're happy that we brush for over 2 minutes every morning and night (no problem doing this) and that he only drinks water or milk and sometimes we'll make a smoothie together. What else can I do?

But another mum mentioned that they get a fluoride coating (I might be getting this wrong) or some kind coating put on their teeth at this age and I'm worried he's missing out on getting this. I don't know what I can do about it as they've never even been able to get into his mouth- aside from a quick look when he's screaming!

My DC were/are the same with the dentist. They started having the flouride in either school nursery or Reception and it went fine. The power of 29 other compliant children is a wonderful thing.

I don’t know if it happens in school where you are?

Thanks. I'm not sure, he's due a health visitor check so I'll maybe chase that and ask them.

Feel terrible as he's so frightened from such a young age.

Scottish dentist here. The fluoride varnish is offered at each appointment. It's a preventative measure. It's yellow, sticky and tastes of banana. But if your child has a good balanced low sugar diet and his teeth are brushed thoroughly with a fluoride toothpaste ( 1400 ppm F) , and there are no existing concerns, you'll be fine to hang fire with the varnish for awhile

Thank you!

His diet could be more low sugar than it is- he likes a biscuit like any toddler does. I'll ask about the fluoride at his next appointment and hopefully he'll have grown up a bit more to explain it to him 🙏🏻
