Baby boy bed wetting.. again

MichelleeG · 10/03/2024 02:23

I posted a thread on here a few months ago as my little boy was wetting the bed multiple times a night which we eventually sorted out. We got lots of helpful advice on here and found out it was because of his vest being to tight. Shortly after we changed his nappy size and went up in clothes size as he is quite a chunky baby.

Unfortunately at 8 months old the problem has come back and he is waking up multiple times a night very distressed which is difficult to deal with (I actually put a thread on yesterday regarding the tantrums in the night).

I went back through the old thread for advice and changed his vests and clothes, as they seemed to be getting a bit tight to 9-12 months. I have also put him up a nappy size to size 5 pampers premium protection as these nappies work well for him. I was so disappointed as this time nothing has helped and the nights are now difficult to deal with.

The only thing that has changed recently is that we have put him in his cot in his own room but I’m not sure if this can cause the problem? He seems to settle down fine in the cot and in the day time he doesn’t seem to bed wet.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean leaking through his nappy, as opposed to wetting the bed?

Yes, leaking through the nappy all the way through to the bed clothes. And quite badly too 😣

My DS has just turned 2 and is in size 5 so I doubt that is the correct size for an 8 month old.

If the nappy is the wrong size it will leak from the sides and possibly top. It should be snug fitting and not be gappy around the legs.

I'd expect you need to go down to at least a size 3 but try different brands to get the best fit for him. I found asda little angels the best fit for both my DD and DS.

The size 4’s were leaving red marks on him and he is a chunky baby. The Pampers nappy fit calculator also suggested going up a size. But it’s definitely worth a try looking into other brands and testing out the 4’s with the bigger clothes. Thanks

Switch nappies. Have a chunky baby this time around and pampers were awful. Played with a lot of different brands and found the sainsburys nappies to be the best. The cost a fraction of the price of pampers and are super soft and stretchy. Depending on weight I'd say maybe try him on sainsburys Little ones size 4+. They are super absorbant as well. And of youvhouse is 16 plus degrees ditch the vest altogether and just use a footed sleep suit plus suitable tog sleep sack.

How big is he OP? Size 5 is big for an 8 month old.

Are you making sure his willy is pointing down into the nappy when you put it on?

Is he drinking excessively?

You could try a different brand of nappy, it may be that the pampers aren't working for him anymore.

On an immediate practical note....have you tried double nappy?

Ohiwish12 · 10/03/2024 02:49

Nappy does sound too big for an 8 month old. And are you sure his willy is pointing down when you change his nappy. How much milk is he having just before bed/during the night?

Sounds good and the Pampers Premium Protection nappies are so expensive so I’d appreciate something more affordable. Will look into it, thanks

One nappy round the right way, another one round the wrong way

MillshakePickle · 10/03/2024 03:01

Also make sure the nappy frills are all pulled out around the thighs and bum, not tucked in. I've made that mistake a time or two

tortiecat · 10/03/2024 03:11

We had to switch to size 4+ and then 5+ pull ups when DS was very young (well before walking or potty training) as he kept wetting through overnight, taped nappies for the day only. You can also use reusable nappy boosters and covers with disposable nappies if this does not work on its own:

tortiecat · 10/03/2024 03:13

DS was chubby too - we have used Tesco nappies since birth and they worked a treat. Huggies were useless, every single one of an emergency pack leaked, and there was no benefit in using £££ Pampers.

Olika · 10/03/2024 06:09

My DD is older (still in nappies) and she wets the bed if she is cold at nights. Is the temperature ok in the bedroom?

Blueuggboots · 10/03/2024 06:10

I hated pampers, they were crap!! We liked the Aldi nappies.

MariaVT65 · 10/03/2024 06:19

Op I have to agree with the other posters, I think your nappy is too big. I get what you say about red marks, but i would honestly try different brands until you find a good fit. As others have said, my DS was in size 5 at age 2 and he is tall.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 10/03/2024 06:35

We liked the Aldi ones too for a chunky thighed DD. We had a to try a few different brands throughout her nappy wearing days and found that a couple of times she'd have a growth spurt and change proportions which would mean a previously perfect brand would suddenly not work.

Go by the weight on the pack and get the smallest pack size you can buy to try them out.

seedsandseeds · 10/03/2024 07:21

My 5yo has size 5s.
Switch brands if it's the chubbiness factor

seedsandseeds · 10/03/2024 07:21

Have you tried cloth?

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/03/2024 07:32

There’s no way 5 is the correct size. My kids aren’t exactly small and I’ve never bought a nappy bigger than a 5 because that’s what they were wearing when they potty trained at 2.5! Try a different brand, maybe nappy pants for the stretch. I found active fit pants best, which are Pampers, but had issues with their baby dry. You might have to get a few different small packs for experimentation. Don’t use a vest at all, just PJs. Make sure his penis is pointing down and the nappy frills are out. Also is he having night feeds still? If he is you probably need to be prepared to change him at the feed because there’s a limit to what one nappy can realistically hold.

MadMadamMimz · 10/03/2024 07:43

I wouldn't necessarily agree with the posters saying size 5 Pampers is wrong. My ds was in size 5 Pampers at that age. It might just be the brand but I find Pampers sizing is nowhere near the recommended weight on the packaging and is all over the place.

sexnotgenders · 10/03/2024 14:51

My 8 month old DS is in size 5 nappies from sainsburys, so it's perfectly plausible the OPs boy is in the right size. My son is in age appropriate clothes (as in, his full wardrobe is all size 6-9 months), so he's not disproportionately massive either. I also have a 3 year old DD who is in size 6 for night time, and she also wears size/age appropriate clothing. Not sure why they're in the sizes they are, I don't question it - both nappies fit the child, and that's all that I care about. So, whilst I unfortunately can't help with the leaks (neither of mine have that issue), I just wanted to provide a counterpoint to all the PPs declaring with strange certainty that the nappy size is wrong

InTheRainOnATrain · 10/03/2024 17:04

5s obviously fit your baby well @sexnotgenders because, well, you’re not getting leaks! There’s no way they’re a good fit for OP’s DS because a well fitting nappy wouldn’t be leaking, and that combined with the fact that at only 8MO he’s got to be quite some way under the weight guide leads to them being too big as the most obvious and likely explanation for the leaks.

I know the weight guides are just a rough guide, and all babies are different, but there’s clearly something wrong with the fit if it’s leaking like that and considering the next size up is typical for 3YOs it’s highly unlikely, probably impossible, that the nappy is too small, and it’s much more likely that it’s too big. Especially considering that OP has already addressed the vest issue, and has posted before so has probably had all the standard advice like penis down, frills out etc.

The only other thing I could think of is if he’s having a lot of night feeds still, and then it’s probably just unrealistic that one nappy could deal with the pee output from that. But if he’s not then trying 4+ in different brands would definitely be my starting point. Can’t hurt to try right, worst case you can use them up during the day.

Regardless, I hope you get it sorted soon OP.

mitogoshi · 10/03/2024 17:11

Another echoing they sound too big - my dd was still in size 4 at 4 when we finally got her out of nappies and was in size 5 pull ups until dry (ish) at night age 7
