Do all kids get worms now??

RedRobyn2021 · 07/03/2024 21:57

I have never had worms and had never heard of them being a thing that children get until recently, I keep getting stuff up on Instagram saying as a parent you will experience worms in your children at some time

Please tell me this is nonsense??

Mine never has.

Mmmmdanone · 07/03/2024 21:59

It's weird as I had them frequently as a child and assumed everyone did but have since found out that's not the case. I did bite my nails as a child so maybe it was that!

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 07/03/2024 21:59

My 2 have never had worms or nits

They’re 7 and 11

Yes it's very normal to get worms, not quite ubiquitous but definitely not at all unusual.

Yogatoga1 · 07/03/2024 22:00

It’s always been common.

my brother got all of them- nits, worms (tape and thread), I never did.

museumum · 07/03/2024 22:02

I never had worms or bits as a child but my ten year old has had both once. The worms definitely came from school as half the class had them at once.

DinosaurOfFire · 07/03/2024 22:03

Mine have never had them, and we've only had headlice once, in 8 years of school.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/03/2024 22:04

Had them all the time as a kid in the 60s. Can’t recall either of ours having them in the 90s/2000s.

Momstermunch · 07/03/2024 22:05

It's particularly a thing for thumb suckers and nail biters. I was a thumb sucker so got them as a kid and karma gave me a nail biting son who also had them. If your kids don't have those habits you'll likely escape them.

scrivette · 07/03/2024 22:08

I didn't have them as a child but I remember my mum telling me to make sure j washed my hands properly so I didn't get worms.

DD has had them a few times but she always has her fingers in her mouth.

Oooooooh · 07/03/2024 22:10

One of mine has had them once (didn’t really suck thumb). One has had them so many times I’ve forgotten (both sucked thumb and put everything in mouth). It was ridiculous. I’d get rid of them successfully (treat everyone, clean repeatedly, wash bedding, wash towels daily), then 3 months later they’d pop up again.
i played hard ball with the thumb sucking by using the horrible tasting nail varnish and once we cracked that the worms stopped.

Mum2jenny · 07/03/2024 22:10

Not sure the current statistics but when mine were at primary school they reckoned around 40% had worms in a given year. I just treated mine every 6 months with a family pack of worming tablets.

HungryBeagle · 07/03/2024 22:11

I had them once as a child. My 10, 8 and 5 year olds have never had them. Never had nits either!

JinglePringle · 07/03/2024 22:15

DD mouths everything and never had worms now aged 12
DS age 4 loves cleaning and tidying has has worms 4 times. I think there is someone at nursery he is catching them from.

I think if they are around it is super easy to catch them.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 07/03/2024 22:15

I've never had worms or nits.

Toptotoe · 07/03/2024 22:16

If you wash your bottom regularly it breaks the breeding cycle as, the female lays her eggs around the anus.

ParrotParrot · 07/03/2024 22:20

Mine haven’t

Mum2jenny · 07/03/2024 22:23

Proper washing of hands for 6 weeks will break the cycle assuming your hands aren’t nearing your sinus without proper washing afterwards. So it can be cleared without meds but with proper hand hygiene

Mum2jenny · 07/03/2024 22:23

Not sinus, anus

Mum2jenny · 07/03/2024 22:24

Autocorrect can be quite funny 😀

EveSix · 07/03/2024 22:25

I'm a primary school teacher, a fastidious hand-washer and have had both more times than I can remember ‐go figure. Worms' eggs are airborne, so very easy to pick up.

PandaG · 07/03/2024 22:29

Never had nits as a child, picked them up first week of teaching practice before my PGCE started. DC had them multiple times, picked up from school, DD had waist length hair which I fastidiously washed, combed and plaited but she still picked them up. I had threadworms a number of times as a child, and once or twice as an adult, but DC didn't - though they did take the tablets when I had to!

LostMySocks · 07/03/2024 22:29

I had worms regularly as a child but was a thumb sucker. Had nits once.
DS1 had worms a couple of times when in nursery but nothing since.
Touch wood no nits yet but have the chemicals and comb in the cupboard just in case

Mumoftwo1312 · 07/03/2024 22:31

My dm was always paranoid about worms and gave us worming tablets twice a year regardless. This thread is making me feel like I should do the same!

No worms yet but headlice are endemic at dd's nursery. We keep treating her till she's all clear (which is so much effort and distressing as she hates hair combing) and then a few weeks later she catches them again.

I read on another mumsnet thread the suggestion that everyone in the country treat their kids for lice on one specific day of the year, to eradicate it once and for all. I'd vote for that!

edit - sorry I've just read, apparently they can occasionally get airborne if you shake sheets etc! Sorry I doubted!

asterel · 07/03/2024 22:37

It’s very normal. Lots of kids/people have them and don’t know it!
