How does bedtime work in your house?

We have DS (5) and DD (2). They share a room and usually go to bed at the same time. DD is a night owl and DS an early bird, so there's a bit of juggling going on.

Tonight DD was in bed early as she's a bit poorly, so I got to have a gorgeous 1:1 bedtime with my oldest and it was just so lovely. His usual antics were charming and hilarious rather than marginally stressful because they're winding up his sister who will take forever to sleep otherwise. There was capacity for playfulness and we had chats about the day which there just isn't usually opportunity for with a toddler around. We got to read some more in-depth books rather than them needing to be universally appealing, and he even read me a story which was wonderful. I often feel like I'm missing him in spite us being in the same house as there's very little opportunity for us to spend time together. We used to have date days but now he's at school they're much harder to organise. Tonight was an example of how lovely bedtimes could be. They always feel more like herding sheep with adult/s spent at the end of a long day and not having the patience to deal with the kids competing for attention.

Is there a way I could separate out bedtimes occasionally do you think? There are usually two adults, though sometimes like tonight there's just me. Does anyone else tag team bedtimes rather than doing it all together? How does it work...or even does it work? Pros and cons would be super!
