Dd (7) will have had 2 weeks off school tomorrow. She’s been really unwell and we’ve been to the GP four times ???

Started with a very high temperature and severe headache and aches , we were told viral and not worry. Rest, fluid, Calpol etc. after 48 hrs she was worse and gp said could hear some mild ‘crackles’ so prescribed some amoxicillin for a week. Dd has just got worse and is coughing all the time , we’ve seen the gp another two times and they said there’s nothing else they can do we have to wait as coughs can linger but she literally hasn’t stopped and cant sleep so even though she hasn’t had a fever in a week we can’t get her to school as she’s exhausted from constant coughing. I don’t really know what to do

I am not sure if it might help ease things at night but we always find that Vicks rub on your feet then socks on for bed improves coughing.

What do DD's coughs sound like? When she coughs, does she make a nasty wheezing sound in between each fit? If so, that's a red flag for whooping cough

She Has bouts of coughing and as they go on for a few minutes it can start to sound like a barking cough but not as obvious as a croup type cough (she had croup a few times as a toddler and it’s not the exact same sound but similar)

My ds has a nighttime cough due to meds. Consultant told me years ago to give him honey. He keeps a squeezy bottle beside his bed for ‘bad nights’.
Works well ( not great for teeth but if it gets her a nights sleep)

Wonder if it was flu? Pretty sure I couldn't stop coughing Once I started.

I mentioned in my earlier post about continuing to contact the GP.

I’d also suggest that you film the coughing fits and when you phone the GP, or 111, ask if you can send a video for them to review. Might get a faster diagnosis. Do mention whooping cough too.

Your poor DD @notwellstressedout. If the dr heard crackles it suggests pneumonia, presumably that’s what the antibiotics were for? Crackles would not indicate whooping cough. If it was pneumonia, recovery can take a while I’m afraid. Pneumonia can leave you exhausted for months after the infection.

Some years ago my son contracted whooping cough. He was around 6 I think. The symptoms initially were dismissed as just a cough until he threw up in the surgery coughing. It didn't sound like WC which is why the GP was sceptical. He had to carry a bowl around with him and looked like death but actually felt OK. I had to get a GP's letter to advise the school he was fit to be there. It went on for a number of weeks too.

I was vaccinated against whooping cough and I still got it when I was two.
