Children constantly poorly this winter

Anyone else’s children been constantly, and I mean CONSTANTLY poorly this winter?

I have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old. It may feel worse as this is my first winter with 2…. But my God this winter has been testing. Since November one or both of them have been poorly. And I’m not talking about a lingering cough… I’m talking virus after virus after virus.

So far since the beginning of November

  1. Toddler had a temperature just as baby was brought home. I don’t know how but everyone else manage to avoid this one.
  2. a week or so later toddler had a temp of 40 and sick during the night. My then 4 week old caught this one and developed a chest infection needing a week of antibiotics.
  3. Just as baby started to get better toddler brought home another virus (just a cold) but passed that straight to baby who was already unwell.
  4. both of them had fevers on and off over Christmas.
  5. January brought more colds, though luckily nothing worse then A snotty nose and cough.
  6. Into feb, another nasty virus. Toddler poorly for a week. Baby developed bronchiolitis and and all over viral rash - needed antibiotics and steroids.
  7. Toddler D+V - luckily with hot washes and constant hand washes the rest of the house managed to avoid.
  8. Yesterday toddler has a fever and baby full of snot and a horrendous cough again.

poor baby has spent his first few short months on this earth poorly and miserable. Has never been able to shift his cough as the next virus takes hold. Toddler starting to struggle aswell with the relentlessness of it all while trying to adapts to having a sibling. I don’t think there has been a single week where they felt well since November. No one is getting any sleep as toddler and baby waking through night due to being unwell, and me and partner are catching at least 50% of them too. But obviously we just have to get on with it to care for the littles. It’s just been relentless and I feel I’m reaching the edge of what I can cope with. I’m feeling tearful all the time and just so fed up with it all x

Hey, do your kids always get a fever each time? My 22 month DS has been ill since mid Jan first with the flu (diagnosed via swab at A&E) after a 12 day temp. Then he had 10 days fever free then another illness with temp this time only 36 hours of fever and today ( 20 days after last illness) he has got yet another temp. I imagine it's another cold brewing but is this normal? Am I the only one with kids getting a temp every time they are ill?? I'm exhausted and concerned.

My little girl who is 2yr 7m gets a fever pretty much everytime. The worst one lasted 21 days. Very rarely she is poorly with no fever.
My boy who is 4 months so far has had 2 fevers so doesn’t seam as bad, but still very poorly x

God yes! My 3yo latest ailment is an ear infection. 18mo has his 117th cold of the season 😆

I feel unreasonable saying this, but I'm also sick and tired of my clothes constantly being covered in everyone's snot.

Same. I wonder why I bother getting everyone dressed most days as clothes are just covered in various bodily fluids x

My son had a temperature on Sunday which only lasted 8 hours. I was sure he caught he's brothers cold but now 4 days later he has yet another temperature and no other symptoms. He seems happy but is this normal, only 4 days between fevers??!!! I'm starting to get really worried it's something worse like cancer with all these frequent fevers.

@Aklein38 i completely understand your anxiety/worries. When my little girl had those fevers that last 3 weeks I was really thinking the worst.
but like I said my daughter gets fevers so frequently I tend to just give her calpol/neurofen to bring it down and continue with the day, and just pray it doesn’t fall on a nursery day x

Is it normal though to have just 4 days between temperatures?? He seems happy enough in himself but I'm terrified there is something more sinister going on...

Mumoftwo2022 · 17/03/2024 20:35

It’s not normal but it’s common at this age and time of year. My little one is the same I expressed my concerns but doctor didn’t seem concerned said it’s frustrating for parents but this time of year especially this year apparently

Well no it’s not normal. But some of us have babies more sensitive to temperatures than others. Mine has had just a few days between fevers on several occasions, and has had extended periods of fevers as I already mentioned. If you are worried speak to your GP and they can assess and help x

I just think that if I go back to doctor they will say that next thing is a blood test but my husband doesn't want to put our son through that as he isn't worried. I just don't think having temperatures so frequent is normal unless there are other symptoms that can explain it and with his current fever, he has no other symptoms which is a first for us. I'm just terrified it's something like leukemia that we are just passing if as viral. I so stressed I really don't know what to do...

Mumoftwo2022 · 18/03/2024 12:35

If you are that worried then a blood test is the only way to know if there is something more sinister underlying. Most probably will not be but sounds like you aren't going to be able to be reassured until you get the definitive answer so it’s the only route to go down.

Aklein38 · 19/03/2024 12:22

Just been to GP as my son still has a temp on day 5 even though he seems happy. I mentioned my worries about something more serious like leukemia but doctor brushed it off saying more likely just viral. My husband says I should be reassured by that but I'm not. What if they are missing something. I've just checked and he's had 10 fevers in 2023 and 4 so far this year. Please someone reassure me that they also went through this to this same extent and their kids are fine?

Just came by to say hugs ans sending best wishes 💐

Yes me. My daughter had well more than 10 fevers last year and more than 10 the years before. And she has just started her 5th fever of this year already. She was vomiting last night and started with a temp today.
I should have shares in calpol and neurofen x

i actually can’t believe she is poorly again, no doubt the baby will be next x

Thanks @ExcitingTimes2023 ! Not that it's nice to hear that your daughter is ill again but at least it is reassuring!

We are on day 5 of this latest fever and going up to 39C right now. I'm just at my wits end. How long do your daughters fevers last? We sometimes only have 2/3 days but sometimes they are a week long!

I never had this with my first!

ExcitingTimes2023 · 19/03/2024 17:51

@Aklein38 oh gosh they vary. So the longest she has had I think was last year over summer and it lasted well over 3 weeks. I think that one was 25/26 days before it broke. But Normally last a few days I would say.

The fever before this one lasted around a week and half maybe 10 days or so. That was a bad one, temps close to 40 most nights, slightly better during the day. So yes I would say the average would be 3/4 days to a week. She is so sensitive to fevers. As soon as she gets a whiff on an illness her temp spikes.

I also have a son who is 4 months. He has been quite poorly with her virus’s too but so far only 2 fevers, so hopefully he isn’t as sensitive x

I have had similar experience since DS started nursery at 11 months. Constantly sick, so much so I thought about taking him out of nursery completely which would mean compromising one of our jobs to look after him. Somehow we’ve managed through (so far) but this weather isn’t giving up and don’t expect it to for this year. He is now on his 4th round of antibiotics in a little under 5 months.

how many anti biotics have you little ones had?

Hope you all feel better soon. X
