Formula feeding on the go

I've had to enter the world of formula which I'm fine doing at home but is there a special flask or something I need for on the go? It's all new to me!

I'm currently making up bottles in advance and storing them in the fridge which I know you're not supposed to do but that's easier said than done when having to wait 30 minutes with a baby who wants his milk!

I generally used ready made for when we were out. More expensive but much easier

We take a made up bottle out with us as that lasts 2 hours, then take ready made with us for later in the day.

Also we use a prep machine at home so no need to wait 30 mins or store in the fridge.

Making fresh is obviously the recommendation but making up in advance and storing in the fridge is also a recommendation from WHO.

I used the perfect prep at home and out and about, I just made them up in advance or used ready made.

Tended to take a carton and a sterilised bottle out. Or you can take a chilled bottle of formula in a cool bag with ice packs and it'll be ok for a few hours. Or take a bottle of hot water in an insulated bag and premeasured formula powder and add the powder to the water when required (although it'd need to cool a bit before drinking)

We've bought these Nuby RapidCool Portable Baby... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09XMZG2M4?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

I had no idea they even existed before buying them but they've been a godsend and cool the formula down in a minute or two

Make a fresh bottle and take with me if i knew baby needed a feed within 2 hrs then always took 1 or 2 ready made bottles for feeds after that

We used perfect prep at home. When out and about I had two chilly bottles, one with cooled boiled water and one with boiling water. Then made up using perfect prep method, so 2oz boiling water, add powder then top up with cool water. Perfect temperature with no fuss.

I did exactly this two, meant a few bottles could be made too if out for the day. As a PP commented as well, the rapid cool is great, however it needs sterilising after each use. I ended up just using it to store sterilised cooled water to make up bottles!

I could never keep track of when baby would need fed while out and about so was always worried milk would expire and I hadn't realised. I would just take ready made formula out with me

Jandob · 01/03/2024 19:27

I had a pot with correct amount of formula, cold sterile bottle of water, mix when out. Flask of hot water and pot to heat up bottle externally. Ready mix is slightly different and sometimes they don't get on with it.

Thelazygardener · 01/03/2024 19:35

At home and out I just added boiled water to the formula and topped up with cool boiled water I stored in the fridge….same concept as the prep machine.

Same thing out and about, I took measured amounts of powder, sterilised bottles, flask of boiling water and a bottle of cool boiled water. I had a Nuby rapid cool but it seemed a bit of a faff having to sterilise each time. You can get away with making 3 large bottles using flasks. My LO has goats milk formula and there aren’t any ready made options but it was totally fine doing it the way I am.

calorcalorcalor · 01/03/2024 20:22

We used prep machine at home and ready-made cartons for out and about, really easy! I felt so nervous feeding out of the house at first as wasn't sure what we needed or the rules around keeping formula safe, but as long as you have a steralised bottle you'll be fine :)

Nuby RapidCool for making fresh on the go. My DH loved them (DC was mostly BF but I struggled to express decent amounts, so having the option of formula meant DH could have 1:1 activities too).

OopsieeDaisy · 02/03/2024 15:51

If I knew DC would want a bottle within 2 hours, I’d make up a bottle and store it in an insulated bottle bag until they wanted it. For any other feeds out and about, I took the ready made bottles with a small container and bottle of hot water so I could warm it up a little bit. There are a lot of mentions of the perfect prep machine on here but if you’re considering it I would do your research first as they’re not actually recommended by the NHS.
