Potty Training from 10 Months?

VerbenaGirl · 29/02/2024 13:27

My DD just took her 10 month old for a regular development check and the Health Visitor advised that now was the time to start first steps on potty training - moving nappy changes to the bathroom and sitting her on the potty an hour after meals. It’s 17 years since I had a baby and I know approaches change, so I don’t want to give her outdated advice, but this does seem very early. What are others with babies of this age and slightly older doing?

I think you can file this under ‘HVs are mostly unhelpful nut jobs’.

I have a 10 month old (and a 4yo) and I have never heard of anyone doing this.

Way too early Imo.

I would let a 2yo sit on a potty before a bath but I wouldn’t do anything with a 10mo. Being able to communicate the need to go to the loo is an important requirement of toilet training

Only person getting “potty trained” will be your DD!

No harm to start reading potty books and talk about potty in conversation, but no child at 10 months will be capable of being “trained”.

It does seem a bit early but actually sounds like a really good way to about it

I've heard of it and I think it's based on predicting when your baby will poo and putting them on the potty. Well my toddler was over 3 years old before we potty trained so we're at the other end of the scale!

If it works for some, great but your daughter should be under no pressure to try it. I think it will be stressful, especially if you're out and about a lot and you're up in the night with them. What about if your daughter's returning to work, I doubt that nurseries will potty train such young babies.

I knew someone through mum and toddler sessions who had both her children potty trained at around a year - apparently with her oldest her MIL said it was time to start and she didn’t know any different! We were all in awe and definitely jealous! I’ve been told that potty training is harder with disposable nappies as the babies aren’t uncomfortable even when they’re wet. So I would say it is possible but would take perseverance and would depend on your circumstances - if you are SAHM etc.

We started my daughter on the potty as soon as she could sit up around 7 months. At 10 months she regularly used it if put on it once sometimes twice a day. Unfortunately we went into hospital for 10 weeks soon after and all the progress went and she stopped using it until we potty trained at 2.5. we would have done it earlier but she refused to sit on the potty.

If I had another I would do it again and hopefully be able to keep it up. I don't think it's ever too early to introduce a potty even if it's just sat in the bathroom so it's existence is known without use

I have never heard that advice before, but it doesn't sound TOTALLY out there.

I believe mine was about a year and a half before I started sitting him on the potty at his bedtime nappy change. This was mainly because he would pee all over the floor and splash in it before I could get his pull up on 😅 but also to get him used to the potty. Successfully toilet trained him at 2y3mo

I started my girls just before their first birthdays, putting them on the toilet, never used potties, first thing in the morning, after meals, and before going out. It does "train" a reflex to go. They were both clean and dry during the day very quickly. We went to a health visitor led group where the HV said it was time to start toilet training, DD heard the word toilet and asked to go.
