Toddler smearing

Apologies as I do realise this is pretty disgusting but desperately looking for some advice.

Our toddler who is 2 and 8 months has taken to waking up early, pooing in his nappy and then wiping it all over the cot 😭. He does not shout to us beforehand to let us know he is awake so by the time we get to him its too late.

We do not have any other developmental concerns but wondering if anyone has been through similar and has any suggestions?

Sorry again as I know it is a horrible thread but its also a horrible way to start a morning so hoping to nip it in the bud!

Ugh poor you. Can you set an alarm earlier to catch him? Video baby monitor? Are you potty training yet? Sorry I don’t have much advice, but I really sympathise

wgat Is he wearing for bed? Put him in a onesie, and put it on backwards so he can’t get to his nappy?

Both of the posters above offer good advice.

You can also get wraps that fit over washable nappies. I wonder if it would be worth putting one of those over his nappy?

Have you tried nappy pants? They can’t really take them off.

the other thing I’m wondering is if he is uncomfortable with poop in nappy in which case perhaps consider potty training.

Thank you so much these are absolutely great suggestions and did not cross my mind at all.

We do still have a monitor for him (PFB 😂) but we keep the sound off as the white noise comes through too loud. We did try setting an alarm for 6am but he must be even earlier than this!!

Baby number 2 is coming next week and the thought of sleepless nights with a newborn and then being greeted to that in the morning.... 😷. Onesies and nappy wraps are my mat leave tasks for today!!

We did try potty training before Christmas but after 2 weeks had to abandon it as the incidents were through the roof. I did wonder if this could be a sign he is maybe ready to give it another go though.... Bad timing or what 😅

Really appreciate the suggestions and will put into action from tonight - thank you and wish us luck!!

My DS did this for a while. I tried all sorts but the only thing that stopped him was a onesie thing with buttons instead of poppers. He didn't have the dexterity to unfasten the buttons so couldn't physically get to the nappy to take it off. You have my sympathies though- it really is grim!

For a reusable nappy wrap to help with this, you want one with poppers, not velcro – velcro is much easier for them to undo. (The poppers on reusable nappies are stronger than the little metal ones on babygrows, baby dungarees, etc.) There are lots of brands with poppers, though, and you should be able to pick some up really cheaply secondhand.

Urg we had this. Little madam loves to poop naked in the bed. We got an extra large sleep suit that we could put on backwards with zips rather than poppers. She could just bust the poppers open. In the summer she was in a leotard, but she did eventually work out how top take that off top down.

We also set alarms for a while so we could catch her in the crime. Thankfully the sleep suit thing put an end to needing to resort to this because she would wake sometimes 5am sometimes 7am and we'd be up at 4.30am regardless...
