My daughter is a camel - how do I make her pee?

Hi - opposite problem to lots of people. My dd (2.6) is potty trained, including being dry at night. But she goes for such a long time between pees (sometimes almost 24 hours...) I am worried she is going to get an infection or something.
She drinks water on and off all day, plus eats lots of watery foods like cucumber. So I don't know what else to do.
She sits on the potty (or toilet) but tells us she just doesn't want to go. She also never goes when she is at her childminders.
I used to have a very strong bladder (before having children), so I guess she's just inheritied that. But I am just a little anxious that she is doing herself harm?
Anyone had any similar experience?

DS1 used to do that. ONce he got to 36 hours or something daft and couldn't wee (not aided by a permanent erection from the baldder presumably sorry tmi) and we ended up in hospital. They gave him calpol and ibuprofen. They said that if theyhold on for too long then the baldder goes into spasm and it becomes painful to wee. The painkillers allow them to wee. Sure enough about 40 mins later he managed a huge wee.

This could be my DD you're talking about! She is 3.9. So glad I am not alone. as everyone else seems to have the opposite problem. She is not quite as controlled as your DD but getting close. Can go for a wee before breakfast at 7am and happily not need to go until 2 or 3 pm. With her it really is about control and being in charge: she really hates being told when to use the loo.
I too had an impressive holding on ability before kids, so perhaps you're right that it's hereditary! I guess we should just count our blessings!

yurt1 - that sounds awful

He did it twice peasholme. First time GP's, then he managed to go, the second time the hospital. He now only really tries to do that when he's ill but we force him to go.

That must have been so worrying for you. How old is he? Any idea why? I must confess I do worry about DD as I am concerned she will make herself ill by holding on like this. She held on for so long when we went to a festival and she didn't like the look of the loos! But as yet, no UTIs or similar.

My DD was always like this - it was wonderful on days out etc. She has never had any problems with infections or pain etc. She is now 19 and still like this - and is extremely grateful that she can to to a music Festival for the day and not have to use the loos!

My DD was also like this; and then when she did go the potty would be overflowing! It was partly because she was anxious about going on the toilet and partly because they (kids) do have extremely strong bladders. If she's drinking okay then I wouldn't worry. Now she's 3.7 she goes what I'd consider to be a normal amount of times a day.

claraquitetirednow · 25/03/2008 13:50

Thanks for your reassurances - perhaps I should stop worrying and just be grateful I have such an easy daughter! I can't imagine what sort of all-day events she will want to go to when she is older, but if the toilets are like the ones at the festivals I have been to, I am sure she will be very grateful to have a strong bladder.

Yurt - your poor ds, I hope we never have to take her to the hospital. The problem is, as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink (or in this case pee!)....

He's 9 now peasholme although hasn't done it for a while! He's severely autistic though so not your standard kettle of fish (and impossible to take his blood pressure! GP and the hospital tried. I think they were relieved when the pain killers worked!)
