How to keep yourself safe as a single mother living alone with kids

I am a single mother living in Stockport, And I live alone with my kids; our area comes under Cheadle Heath Police Station. Murders are very common in this area nowadays, and I am very, very fearful about being attacked by local goons; how to keep yourself safe? Has anyone faced a similar situation? Single mothers, please suggest.

I had my front door (live in a flat, don't have a back one) secured and a spy-hole inserted into the door.

But I don't live in a dangerous area.....

I have a landline so I can always call 999 if my mobile is off.

Oh, and I did a self-defence course. Years ago now but got some helpful tips and tricks.

Most attacks, rapes and murders are perpetrated by somebody already known to the victim, so the chances of a stranger attack are very slim. The thing that’s most likely to wind you up in trouble is introducing a new man into yours and your childrens’ lives, so, if and when you do, take it very slow, have your wits about you and be very cautious indeed.

Nothing else to add apart from this is a very sensible comment!!

Is there opportunity to move from the area if you feel unsafe? No one should feel like that
