School injury with photo

DD is in year 1. A classmate pushed her in the playground, she fell over, scraped her cheek and nose. Not sure if visible from the image but her cheek and side of nose are a bit swollen too. She's saying it's very sore and is finding it uncomfortable to sleep on the side of her face. And she feels ugly. 😔

Am I to raise this with the school? Would this leave a scar? What would help it heal quickly?

She's very brave but admitted to crying a lot all afternoon. I feel so upset that I wasn't there to console her.

Did school tell you what happened? Did she tell a teacher at the time?

Whether this needs a follow up depends on context. It sounds like an accident.

I don’t think it will leave a scar. You should definitely correct her about feeling ugly. Having a graze does not make anyone ugly. It will heal quickly. You could put something like Sudocreme on it if you like.

cansu · 27/02/2024 21:52

If you are concerned take her to the GP. Personally I would put some cream on it and see how it is tomorrow. I am not sure what you mean about raise it with school. Children at that age do sometimes rush around and push into one another. I would assume the school spoke to the other child about being kind and comforted your child. I am not sure what else you want from them.

They messaged to say she's had a minor injury and a cold compress was applied to clean the area.

I'm surprised you didn't get an accident form for that.

But right now I'd be more concerned with the swelling, does it feel warm at all?

Mite be worth getting it looked at, or at lest draw a line around it and see if it gets any worse.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 27/02/2024 21:55

Are you saying the school were unaware this happened? If so, I would mention it to her teacher just in case there is a pattern of behaviour with the other child at all.

edit - cross post, I see the school did know. I don’t think there’s any need to raise it again with them then.

MissyB1 · 27/02/2024 21:59

She’s fallen over at school and grazed her face, don’t make it into a drama. Give her some Calpol, clean it with soap and water, apply a cold compress if it’s still swollen. It will probably look a lot better in the morning.

They did message.

It does feel warm and the colour is brightening as in the pink is turning more vivid.

I'll see how she is in the morning and may get it checked by the GP.

First and only child. I think I may be worrying more than I should

Bless her. Some posters seem to want to make you feel “fussy”. School should have phoned not message and said she is very distressed giving you the option to pick her up. Hope she heals quickly.

GingerScallop · 27/02/2024 22:06

I don't think is anything major given that school treated her with a compress. Kids that age push each other and fall. It's part of growing up. Today it's your kid sadly. Another day it might be your kid pushing someone's kid. Eventually they learn. To me it doesn't look serious at all and cold compress and a report to you seem very appropriate. Comfort your kid if need be. Assure her. But don't make a big deal out of it. To her or to the school

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 27/02/2024 22:07

My DD fell and hit her face a few years ago. This was the damage. We put cold compresses on it and let it heal. The next day, it had gone down significantly and 3 years later, no scarring.

I would speak to the teacher to find out what happened and to pass on what your DD said but I wouldn’t be too worried about scarring. Lots of TLC for your DD.

Humanswarm · 27/02/2024 22:07

Please don't worry, I'll bet by morning it will have drastically reduced. These things happen and it won't be the last time. Try not to fret and don't let DD see you fret. She'll be fine!

Gabby10 · 27/02/2024 22:07

Oh bless her! It's probably quite sore because of where it is and how much that part of your face moves without even realising! I was around this age when I fell over ice skating and grazed all one side of my face. No scars at all but it did hurt for a while. I'd pop some cream on maybe in a couple of days once it's starts to dry x

Yep. Did she never go into childcare before school? My toddler came out of nursery with worse injuries than that most week!

howmuch5 · 27/02/2024 22:15

One of mine did similar to @BeingATwatItsABingThing DD. No scarring at all.

School called when DD did that and explained what happened. I think that's what I would of expected rather than a message.

Are you worried the push wasn't accidental?

I'm so sorry your DD experienced this. It looks very painful.

I'm glad she healed and there was no scarring. Can I please ask if you had used any oils/creams to treat the injury?

I'd like to know what happened so will speak to her teacher tomorrow.

Thank you. 💐

I would put money on it being much better by the morning. If she's still awake, give her some calpol- everyone knows it's magic- and be upbeat and cheerful. Make sure she knows it will be completely better in a few days and try very hard not to go down the "feeling ugly" path.

DappledThings · 27/02/2024 22:18

DS fell at school recently and cut his face on the edge of a bench. DD fell over her keyworker's foot at nursery and knocked out one of her front teeth.

Things happen. It does look a bit sore but just a graze. I'd stick some Sudocrem on it.

It's a graze caused by a fall; it's not an insect bite or an allergic reaction!!

whiteboardking · 27/02/2024 22:19

Nasty graze. That's all.

I would've appreciated a phone call. I was at work when I received the message. I didn't think the graze would be as big as it is if I'm honest.

DD said her classmate kept saying it was an accident and helped to take her to the teacher on duty.

It's just one of those things OP. Nothing to worry about. Don't make a big deal of it.
