Giving purées so baby takes medicines

Hey ladies
been struggling to get my 4 month old to take her Omeprazole. Called the HV team and they suggested give it to her with some apple puree (I tried with a small bit of her morning milk and she just refused and syringe isn’t cutting it as she just spits it all back out).
what’s peoples thoughts on this? I’ve been really against early weaning, and o know it’s technically not weaning as it’s only a teaspoon or so once a day but I just feel really worried and quite against it.
but on the flip side I do need her to take the medicine otherwise her reflux is awful…

Sometimes needs must with that kind of thing. Giving her the puree a bit earlier than ideal is likely better than not getting the medication into her.

Babies with serious reflux are sometimes weaned early so I wouldn’t be too worried about one spoonful a day.

It's worth a try, you don't need to start weaning, just try and see if that helps her take her medicine, it might work, it might not.

And I say that as someone who did BLW with all three of mine at 6 months old back when it was a brand new thing.

People have been weaning from 3 or 4 months for a long, long time.

Still today, many cultures continue to wean at this age.

We've personally been told to wean from 4 months by our UK based allergist, to reduce the risk of allergies (high risk baby for allergies). We've been told to give both peanut butter and egg mixed into other foods from 4 months.

Guidelines change all the time as new research comes out.

In your shoes, I'd have no hesitation giving the purees.

A family member's child started taking medication for a serious medical condition at 6 weeks old. On the recommendation of their clinical team, this medication was always sprinkled on top of a small spoonful of apple puree. It was absolutely fine - you've had a recommendation from a medical professional, and they clearly feel it's in your baby's best interest

I used to put a little of the medicine on my child's dummy or favourite teething toy. He would always take it that way although it is a slightly time consuming method! No other way worked for him. Do what's best for you and your baby. If purée is the best way for you and your little one then go for it. As others have said plenty of people have weaned and do wean from 3-4 months.

Thanks ladies that’s all reassuring information and definitely I agree it’s a needs must situation at the moment.
tbh was just a bit unconfident in the HV as she recommended a few things from pharmacy too and when I went to get them they said absolutely not with the medication she’s on!
so after that I felt a bit worried about the advice… especially as every HV says something different.
but great points about the fact that people have been fully weaning from 4 months and their babies are fine!… didn’t think of it like that
tjanks again ladies xx

I'm surprised at that advice, the large EAT study did not show a significant impact on developing allergies by introducing allergens at 4 months vs 6 months. The current NHS advice is to not delay introduction of common allergens, but to introduce when you start weaning from 6 months. Havong said that it won't do any harm to introduce allergens at 4 months, the issue, as you are probably already aware, is delaying the introduction of potential allergens which has clearly been shown to increase allergies.

NHS leaflet on weaning:

"In infants at risk of food allergies, particularly those with a family history or those with eczema, weaning of these foods may best be commenced from 4 months old if your baby is developmentally ready to start solid foods".

I think the advice is 6 months for the gen pop.

Needs must sometimes, she needs her medicine so it's not really weaning if you just give her a bit of fruit purée. It's on HV advice too. Tbh my DC were 5 and 5.5 months starting weaning, both very hungry and interested in food so HV said go for it, no allergies etc for either of them
