Tips for improving DS's diet please!

DS is 6.5 and is not a great eater. When he was a baby he was pretty good. And as a toddler too. But over the last couple of years he has become much more picky. I really want to improve the content of his diet but am not looking forward to the battles! Any tips would be appreciated.

He has school dinners and it is good - freshly cooked and organic where possible. School also provide snacks for Key Stage 1 so they are pretty healthy too - fresh or dried fruit, bread with ham or cheese or salami, cereal sometimes etc. Problem is I don't know how much of it he eats.

He is semi allergic to dairy and was off it totally for over a year so doesn't eat much in the way of yoghurts etc but he loves cheese.

Have gotten into a bad habit of letting him have crap for breakfast basically - Nutella on bread or cocopops. He would happily live on a combination of pasta with cheese, pizza, or sandwiches with ham and/or cheese.

Is not keen on potatoes in any form. Or rice particularly. Or vegetables except for peas and sweetcorn.

We had a chat in the car this morning and I told him we will all be eating more fruit and veg and that I would do a chart for us all to tick off our fruit and veg intake per day.

Any and all suggestions gratefully received. Can't believe I have let him get to this stage!

Thanks swc - I did have a nice pasta sauce recipe from here - I think it was Dior's - must hunt it out and try that - will add a small amount of grated courgette and carrot.

He seems to live on pasta though! And I know what will happen - he will make himself sick of it and then what will I feed him??!!

how about letting him help with shopping.start with lunch-he decides what to buy-hands over your money, helps put it away then helps prepare it and wash up.(my dd has been doing this for packlunches and its working).then dinner.or maybe even give him a few recipe books to look at-childrens ones might be nicer.

He does like lentils. Used to love soups - will try that thanks.

He is often involved in shopping cheesesarnie - I will buy stuff and he will try it and then say he doesn't like it.

I think I might start with breakfasts. No more crap. He can have Nutella or coco-pops at the weekend only. I wish he liked porridge or muesli. He does like weetabix.

how about gradually mixing the cocopops into something.

Wow swc - Nutella in the porridge may be the way to go! Got to be worth a try!
