Travel with a 3 month old

Hi all,

hoping for advice and experiences please ! I’m due to travel later this year with a 3 month old and getting myself in a tizz.

im considering either the babyzen yoyo2 or the Ergobaby metro+ to travel with. Leaning towards the ergobaby as it lays flat and cheaper - any advice ? Also travelling with jet2 who allow 10kg for equipment. The ergobaby is 8kg not leaving enough weight for a car seat. Has anyone else managed this?

Hoping to breastfeed but if not and I’m doing bottles- how do I manage that in the go and away??

and any other general advice for travelling with a little one greatly appreciated. Thank you :-)

Yoyo will lay flat if you buy the newborn pack. I haven’t tried the ergobaby so can’t comment on that.
If the yoyo will fit in the overhead locker (it has on every plane I’ve tried it on) then you could pay for an overhead cabin bag and count it as that. You can get carseat adapters for it so you can put the carseat onto the pushchair which might be helpful.

Buy/borrow a baby carrier too.

We have a silver cross clic which folds small and you can take as hand luggage. Echo pp you need a sling too. If you can breastfeed, it’s so much easier and less faff especially when travelling. And in some
countries you need to get the right bottled water to bottle feed.

3m is a great age for travelling! They are so portable. We have a yoyo as a second pram for travelling. You can bring milk for babies with you (formula or breast). You can also buy formula at the airport, a friend of my pre-ordered. I never heated milk. I used to store my breast milk in the fridge and use it straight from there, never had any issues and saves a lot of warming hassle. I also used premade formula which I used straight from the container at room temperature.

I had the newborn pack on the YoYo. It goes in the overhead locker as one of the adults carry on allowance. So not related to any baby equipment that goes in the hold eg car seat.

Hm. Lots of choices. I am assuming your baby isn’t here yet so you don’t know what works best for you?

I think I’d check a pushchair and use a carrier around the airport for a baby that small. I’d also hire a car seat the other end. Once they’re bigger / heavier and being carried doesn’t help them sleep and you want somewhere to put them down a pushchair is a good idea but I’m still carrying my 8 month old out of preference because it means I’m hands free. Honestly, take as little as you can manage with because it’s a hassle navigating an airport with stuff.

If taking a car seat is important to you and you want it as carryon get a small pushchair that can be used as a travel system. You may not be able to take both in the overhead compartment but you can gate check the pushchair. We have a Cybex Beezy which you can buy a travel bag for and even though it’s larger than the max dimensions we have taken it on board in the overhead compartment no problem. I’ve never tried taking a car seat on a plane.

In my experience Jet2 is quite generous with their allowance for baby stuff. We took a car seat and travel cot in the hold and took our Yoyo on board as hand luggage. You can pad the car seat bag out with something light but useful like nappies

I can’t offer any advice on the pram but hopefully just some reassurances on travel in general….my LO is 8 months now and we travelled with him at 12 weeks (firstly flew to Scotland for a week and then on to Spain for a week). It was actually much more straightforward than I expected and he was FF due to tongue tie issues.

Their naps and sleep is still very fluid at that age and I found as long as they were fed and comfortable the rest really did fall into place. For flights I took the ready made bottles, they just had to be scanned separately, I don’t think there was a weight limit but you could take as much as you needed for the duration. I took powder in my hold bag and a small foldable travel kettle for making bottles.

A sling or baby carrier is a must, they really are so much easier.

I have flown some short haul inbetween those trips and even thought there are sometimes weight limits on baby items I’ve actually found airlines to be particularly lenient and helpful at checkin and they don’t usually get their knickers in too much of a twist over baby items.

have fun!

3 months is a fab time to travel, they’re so portable at that age.

If you can breastfeed that makes life a lot easier - plus something to aim towards when it’s tough in the beginning. Not having to cart around bottles/steriliser/powder etc when abroad really will make your life a lot easier. And by 3 months you should definitely be past the hardest bit and it’ll be easy for you both then.

When Dd was really tiny I only took a sling with us, as she slept happily in there strapped to me, and if I wanted a break she would sleep on my knees whilst I ate.

I would take a small pram if you need to and then hire a car seat at your destination (or depending where you’re going you can pick them up quite cheaply).

Thanks everyone, I’m going through reading all your messages now. Love how helpful mums are !

I would buy the newborn pack with the Yoyo. My reason for saying I want it lie flat was more for naps once baby is over 6months as it doesn’t look flat enough to nap in? I’m going based on experiences with my son. We didn’t fly until much later with him though due to Covid !

Will def be buying a sling, I need my hands more with another child haha. I am going to have a look at them soon but the ergobaby sling was quite popular when I had my son? I briefly used a babybjorn mini with him but not v much.

jet2 told me the equipment has to be within 10kg which I wasn’t expecting. I assumed it was just two pieces regardless of their weight ! Hopefully they won’t be too strict if we go slightly over. We aren’t renting a car but will need the car seat for taxis.

@Sonora25 I did like the clic but wondered how it would be with a 3mo. Did you use it under 6 months ? How was it ?

very reassured to hear all your experiences. I thought I was mad for going with a baby so young! Baby isn’t here yet so can’t really imagine what it’ll be like with two !

The YoYo in the 6 months+ configuration isn’t totally lie flat but it’s maybe 85% of the way there. Both of my 2 have slept happily in it up to 3YO, in fact it’s the only place we can still count on DS having a decent nap!! It’s by far the most popular pram round these parts (SW London) and I see kids asleep in them all the time including 3 younger siblings just today at DS’s lunchtime nursery pick up. Agree also that 3MO is an easy age to travel with. It’s the roughly 8 to 18 months window that’s toughing going, basically from when they get mobile until they develop the attention span for an ipad!!

Sonora25 · 27/02/2024 14:45

I used it for my son when he was around 3/4 months old. You can only use it completely flat at that age or maybe a little bit lifted (I can’t remember now). I love how light it is and you can fold it with one hand (perfect if you have two kids). I bought a foot muff thing too as my son was a winter baby.

TheBirdintheCave · 27/02/2024 20:08

We're off to Vienna in September when we'll have a three month old and a nearly four year old.

We bought a second hand YoYo2 with newborn pack and will be taking Milton tablets to sterilise bottles whilst we're over there.

BellaNutella88 · 03/03/2024 16:41

Thanks everyone for all your help! I had a look at all the options and in the end I’ve ordered the silver cross clic. We have a bigger travel system for day to day and personally I didn’t feel the 6months plus seat for the Yoyo reclined enough so that helped settle my mind !

Will take on board all the tips for travelling with a baby! Hopefully it goes smoothly haha. Thanks again xx
