Understanding my child’s glasses prescription

My son is 4 and just had his eyes tested with drops they gave him a +2.25 prescription and the only picture he couldn’t see was a fish
he’s never complained about his eyes and the only reason we went was to rule out that he didn’t need them as he’s been having headaches. So we were shocked when they said he does. He’s also been told he needs to visit the eye hospital so now I am really worried !

I think it’s routine to send children so young to the eye clinic, mine was under the hospital for years but there was nothing wrong, they just like to do the prescription and do regular checks so try not to worry.
Your DS is long sighted. Mine is too but has been wearing +6.50 since he was around 10 months old. There’s a bit of info here.

At that age their brains can compensate so they somehow still see fine, which is why he might not have had issues with his vision.

You don't realise what you can't see until you can see it.
My sister didn't realise you were meant to see roadsigns before you were on top of them or other peoples registration plates when driving until after she got glasses.

My boss got glasses when he went to uni and realised he couldn't see new people's faces. His filled in the blanks at school as he had known his friends when he vision meant he could see faces

I wasn't diagnosed with double vision until I was 10. Similar headaches and tired eyes led to an opticians appointment. I thought everyone saw double with anything close up

I would not worry about that prescription at all.

Your son is only four and his prescription is a plus so it will likely reduce as he grows, kids who have plus that young often grow out of needing glasses.

My son had a plus.4.5 in one eye and a plus 2.5 in the other, with lazy eye and a squint. He has worn glasses since 4 and will have to all his life.

He is much older now, and his prescription has reduced year on year.

As long as his headaches have gone, and his is seeing right with the glasses just crack on. I always buy a second pair, for emergencies.

Try not to worry, the hospital will probably re test and give the prescription for the glasses, they also have child based assessments that are more thorough. They will be wanting to make sure the headaches are related to the refractive error and nothing else.

Thank you
they have said both eyes are +2.5 but at risk of lazy eye if no glasses
