How do I handle this without upsetting DS?

At the beginning of the Easter holidays I promised DS that I would help him make some music videos with The Sims 2 to put on YouTube as he's always watching ones that other people have made.

Anyway he was over the moon and we've so far made two of them. The first one was a video we put together for his favourite chemical romance song and it got a good reception when we uploaded it and the 2nd one was a video we did to one of my favourite songs.

The 2nd one went down brilliantly, a thread was started on the bands website going on about it with links to the video and then we were contacted by the bands record company saying how brilliant it was and that they'd added it to their own YouTube account as a favourite for the band's fans!

We were over the moon and DS was so excited but the truth is, he didn't have much input in those videos as all, he watched me make them, gave a few ideas here and there and gave his opinions on certain scenes etc. Thing is he is under the impression that HE made the videos and has now gone on to make a new one all by himself.

He's very proud of it and wants to add it with the other two but after he showed me it I'm not sure if we should upload it. I'm not critising his work so to speak but the video makes no sense, the scenes do not fit with the music and the game is paused so many times during the filming that its hard to watch without feeling a bit bored. He's also put random images of dogs in it and everything.

What do I do? do I let him upload it with the other two videos and hope nobody leaves nasty comments or find a way of telling him that his video isnt really the kind of thing people watch on youtube? Or am I being horrible? What I'm worried about is that there is a bit of competition on there over who can made the best Sims 2 videos and I think they will jump at the chance to take the piss out of someones effort if its not up to "their" standards. Then you have the loyal fans of the band who will probably start going on about how he's missed the point of the song etc...

He's 9 by the way.

Could you offer to help him 'tweak' it - on the basis that two heads are better than one - as you found on the initial one!

No idea what this thing is but could you title it to make sure that others know it is done by a child in the hope that they would be sensitve??

Personally, I think I's have a little talk to him about the fact that this one is all his own work and is a bit different artistically, and see what he wants to do.. If he wants to upload it, then let him upload it....

Not sure how much you two are into this (I'd never heard of videos with Sims people before a thread on Mumsnet last week!) but maybe you could compare and contrast your style to DS's style...

Either way, I'd let him upload it.... The worst that can happen is that a few random strangers say nasty things about it... I think that's worse than YOU telling him it's not good......

Just my opinion...

I'd love to see them!

Agree with poppychick - can it be titled so it's obvious that a child has done it? Don't know much about these things so don't know if it's possible.

I'd love to see these too, MrsSnape! We are big MCR fans too (have read a couple of your posts about your Son) My older DS is starting to dabble with music-related things on YouTube. Think he may have done a Gerard Way/MCR one, will have to check. He also loves dogs and the Sims - so your Son's creation sounds great actually! However I can see what you mean and think you've been given some good advice so far about making it obvious its a childs work if poss. There seems to be absolutely anything and everything on YouTube for all tastes, so I hope that if you do decide to upload it that it is a positive experience for him, and that he has fun during the hols!

xx
