Hi all.

what and how much food does your 18mo eat in a day do they seem to eat the same things?

bit of back round my DS has dairy and egg allergy so his diet is already restricted because of that . He eats ok but seems to be the same things all the time especially dinners and he’s just starting to get in that fussy stage.

for breakfast.
bowl of porridge/ready brek made with koko milk
hand full of blueberries
or on a quick day slice of toast and banana

snack ( sometimes )
hand full of Pom bears or skips
few grapes cut up
bread sticks

lunch
slice of toast peanut butter
or croissant
very occasionally will eat a sandwich
sometimes potato waffles
mixed fruit bowl pear , orange , grapes depending on what fruit he’s had in the morning
dairy free petits flious yogurt or suckie .

dinners.
dinners are always the same he will eat and completely finish the following

spag bowl
jacket potato with either beans or tuna mayo ( egg free mayonnaise)
cod or salmon with mash
occasionally chicken breast with mash
if he’s in the mood he’ll eat pasta bake
( he like a dessert sometimes so will eat dairy free custard or home made apple crumble and custard or some little biscuits sometimes fruit )

he used to eat sausages won’t anymore
used to eat some veg won’t anymore
will only eat beans with jacket potato and nothing else so no beans on toast anymore!

tried him with home made mild chilli last night spat it out

does his diet sound ok?
is the lack of veg an issue if he’s eats lots of fruit.
I’m running out of ideas for dinners mainly and don’t want him to get sick of the same things!

Just to add I have no concerns about his weight he’s always been a big boy!

yes sounds good! maybe try some hidden veg in there if he doesn't like veg anymore. Well done for giving him a good, varied diet whilst also managing allergies.

Gingerthecat · 22/02/2024 16:15

@carmexmum

im just worried in case he gets sick of these meals especially dinners as they are on repeat weekly lol

thank you it’s not easy having a LO with allergies I’m lucky I can manage this much with not being the best cook. im always trying to think of new things to cook but most of the time he doesn’t like them

I do try hidden veg I put grated carrots in my spag Bol along with onions and garlic.

and sometimes manage a tiny bit of broccoli or cabbage in his cod and mash lol !

Sounds similar to my 18 month old. Luckily he doesn't have allergies but he eats the same things most days. He has less variety for dinner than yours and sometimes ends up with porridge or toast again after refusing his lovely homecooked hot meals (sob). The only vegetable type things he'll eat are olives and cooked carrots in butter. He will only eat bananas and berries for fruit, occasionally a little bit of apple. He mostly lives off cheese, yogurt and milk so I really feel for you not having those options.

Sounds like a reasonably good diet! I'd just keep offering different fruit and veg alongside food / meals he does like. And hide loads of veg in the spag bol, if you have a food processor, try red pepper, courgette, carrot, celery, and bulk it with a tin of lentils so less meat?

Gingerthecat · 22/02/2024 18:02

@Givemepickles

i guess some kids do just like eating the same things one of my sisters children are the same , yes allergies are hard and to make it harder my DP can’t have gluten , My DS loves fruit so I’m lucky there he just won’t eat veg and lives off the same meals.

@Rosesanddaisies1

he’s really good with fruit he absolutely loves it just not veg , I do put grated carrots in my spag Bol il give celery go next thanks!

Kids really don't have the same level of boredom with food that we have.

My has a lot of allergies and reflux so has a very limited with diet. She was slow to wean and didn't eat her first meal until 13 months! She still has periods of not eating much at 3.5. What you described would be a very good day. She is quite happy with a bowl of Cheerios or Weetabix or a slice of toast for breakfast. A peanut butter sandwich (one slice folded in half) an apple and some cucumber for lunch and dinner of pasta with olive oil every day on a none eating day. Typically refusing to eat at least one of the meals. She eats a lot better on eating days but she's more than happy with this very bland diet day after day.

Sounds good, I think they do just like eating the same thing a lot! More veg is never a bad thing if you can manage it - can you add some to the mash? Carrot, swede, parsnip, sweet potato are ones we frequently do. Could also add something like grated courgette to the Bolognese?

Gingerthecat · 23/02/2024 17:11

@Superscientist

my DS has the two allergies and was a bit of a refluxy baby more silent , he was also slower than normal to wean he didn’t start eating and enjoying foods until 9months before that was only tiny little bits and gagged quite a bit .

he eats quite good now just feel like it’s always the same over and over but then again he enjoys it and eat it that’s the main thing

I made home made sausages rolls today and they were a massive hit yaaay! Scoffed two of them for lunch .

@JC89 I do try lol sometimes he sniffs it out when I had it to the mash .

ohhh grated courgette didn’t think of that one il give it ago!
