Am I over feeding my bf baby

DD is 5 weeks tomorrow. She’s just went into 0-3 babygrows now this is because first size was crunching her toes a bit she fit the length. Had a bit of body room

She is long from what I can see which is why we went up babygrow sizes

at birth she was 8lb, 3 weeks (midwife couldn’t come at 2) she weighed 8lb9oz

shes due to be weighed at 6 weeks again but I’m wondering because of sizes of these things is she on track or is it really early for her to be in 0-3???

am I feeding her too much? She does feed quite frequently but I read that sometimes it’s not for food it’s for comfort etc and she’s newborn so I do that. She won’t take a dummy x

No it's fine. Some babies never wear first size at all, and she won't overfeed.

Pixilicious1 · 22/02/2024 11:50

Well she is 0-3 months so they are the right size surely? My daughter was long and always seemed to go up a size before her peers. Honestly don’t worry about it, I’m sure your DD is perfect x

dementedpixie · 22/02/2024 11:51

But she is 0-3 months old if she's 5 weeks. Why do you think this is a problem?

She is 1 month so bang on 0-3! Some babies go straight in to 0-3. Mine always outgrew anything with feet well before the label said, so I mainly bought footless or sometimes chopped the feet off an outfit.

No, you are not over feeding her.

NotARealWookiie · 22/02/2024 11:54

0-3 is right for 5 weeks.

dd1 was big at birth and went straight to 0-3, dd2 was tiny but still in 0-3 at 5 weeks.

a breastfed baby will like to feed for comfort but it’s fine, breastmilk is quickly digested and if they did have too much they’d bring it up.

Momcheri · 22/02/2024 11:56

Thanks sorry I said it to. Friend and she was like wow in 0-3 already?!

so I. My head I thought is it too soon?

I don’t know her weight yet I’m estimating between 9-10lb? As like I say first size fits her body but her little feet were so scrunched :(

Breastfed babies just take what they need. They can't be overfed.

One of mine was over ten pounds at birth and she was in 3 - 6 months clothing by six weeks.

Don't forget also that baby clothes have completely mad sizing.

ChateauMargaux · 22/02/2024 12:05

It is almost impossible to over feed a breastfed baby.

Baby cloth sizes are indeed inconsistent at best!

Yogatoga1 · 22/02/2024 12:09

Bear in mind that sometimes what is perceived as “comfort sucking” is aimed at stimulating your supply :)

your baby may not actually be feeding, but the sucking action feeds back to your body to make more milk. So if you can bear it don’t feel guilty about letting her comfort suck if she wants :). It’ll hopefully make the coming growth spurt less knackering for you.

you can’t over feed a breast fed baby as they can control the flow- a bottle fed baby can’t.

Superscientist · 22/02/2024 12:24

You might find footless sleep suits and socks better. One of my friends had a baby that went straight into 0-3 months as he had long legs and big feet. She switched too footless sleepsuits as he was average in the body so wasn't ready to move up body wise at the same pace as his legs
Maybe look into PJ's too a lot have feet attached to the bottoms. I personally have a strong loathing of sleepsuits so always used a mix of PJ's and sleepsuits. If was to have my time again I would mostly have pjs.

We had the opposite issue and my daughter was still in 0-3 months at 5months we asked the HV if we should be concerned and she did measure her length for us. She was perfectly in proportion on the same percentile for height and weight. Gaining weight and growing at steady pace dictated by baby is the best thing to focus on.

TwoWithCurls · 22/02/2024 12:38

You can't over feed a breastfed baby. As the WHO recommends, you feed on demand, ideally until age 2!! So no, definitely not. Follow some lactation consultants on IG or FBook and you'll soon find out what's normal and what's not.

donteatthedaisies0 · 22/02/2024 12:48

Yeah I fed two like this and don't think it's possible to overfeed a breastfed baby ,they liked being there though ! Gave me a chance to sit and read to myself or toddler .

Moriquendi · 22/02/2024 12:49

My daughter was 8lbs 4oz at birth. In first size for a week, 0-3 only lasted a month. So at 5 weeks mine was in 3-6 months 😂. She got weighed at 6 weeks and was 12lbs 9ozs.

My son was in 3-6 months at 4 weeks, he was big baby, 9lbs 3 at birth and on the 91st percentile.

TrudyProud · 22/02/2024 12:50

You can't overfeed a breastfed baby.
My daughter was born 8lbs3 at day five was 8lbs 13. At day nine was 9lbs3.

She went straight into 0-3 months as has long legs and feet (I'm 5ft7, DH 6ft2). Tomorrow is her 6 weeks check.

My 22 month old was in 0-3 months by 5 weeks because she's tall. She's 75th centile and very active. Don't worry

You can't overfeed an exclusively breastfed baby. 5 weeks is fine for 0-3 month clothes - some babies are in that size from birth.

Momcheri · 22/02/2024 13:27

Thanks everyone I asked as well because like I do try to comfort her if she’s not long fed and is fussing but if I’ve tried rocking, seeing if she’ll take a dummy and winding and she’s still on me doing the ‘rooting’ I call it haha where she bobs her head trying to latch or chews her hand

i feed her then

so I didn’t know if I was offering feed too much

Sounds bang on average, not that that matters.

My newborn also grew in length before chunking out so was in leggings and tops for a bit before we could go back to sleepsuits.

Also not uncommon for newborns to cross centile lines until they find their new normal. My DD crossed two before settling but remained height/weight proportionate and there were never concerns about her feeding too much (she was born on the smaller side of average, but from a very tall family so made sense).

woooaaaahhhhh · 22/02/2024 21:41

You can't over feed a bf baby. Just follow her cues.

Onelittleone216 · 22/02/2024 21:46

Keep feeding 😊 you need to establish your supply and frequent feeding is a part of doing that. It’s great that she’s gaining and moving up sizes, well done to you both!

Mischance · 22/02/2024 21:49

I used to cut the feet off - the babygrow, not the baby! Smile

mollyfolk · 22/02/2024 21:58

It’s unlikely you are overfeeding a 3 week old when you are breastfeeding. If I remember correctly there is a growth spurt around 3 weeks - they feed a lot in order to stimulate your supply so you can meet their growing needs. Don’t worry, keep feeding, everything will settle down from about 8 weeks to 12 weeks.

HelloRose · 22/02/2024 23:02

As others have said, you can't overfeed a BF baby so keep following her cues. My DD was always wearing a size up - she was quite long and still is.

Sticksareforlookingat · 22/02/2024 23:08

Feed her every single time she's looking for it. She's newborn, don't try to soothe her in other ways if she's clearly looking for milk. You can't overfeed her. Literally her only job right now is to take in calories so that she can grow.

Many babies are never in the newborn size. Mine was but he was 6lb. Your baby was 8lb at birth.

Ignore the sizes and dress her in what she fits in.
