Green poop - is this normal? *pic warning*

My EBF 3 month old has been pooping yellow green for a week. The poop is streaked with mucus. Today, her poop was bright green! These poops have also smelt awful, not then usual milk smell, but more like acidic, like vomit. My baby is otherwise happy and eating often, although she started spitting up a bit more after a feed this evening. Is this an illness? An intolerance? Help!

My ebf babies had nappies like this when they were teething! Is she drooling a lot?

Helplessandheartbroke · 21/02/2024 20:11

Defo worth speaking to hv

HideTheCroissants · 21/02/2024 20:13

My EBF babies often had nappies like that. If baby is happy, feeding well, periods of sleep, periods of activity etc. then they are probably fine. BUT if you are worried speak to your Health Visitor.

Green poo is usually not a concern, but along with the mucus and reflux may suggest an allergy. Speak to the HV and keep an eye on symptoms, they often seem reluctant to take allergies seriously

JC89 · 21/02/2024 20:14

Mine has some like that, also some that are greener (spinach green!). HV said it was normal and there can be a range in poo colour!

WhatInTheFuckery · 21/02/2024 20:14

Mine had it when she had a cold

Slanketblanket · 21/02/2024 20:15

It's a classic sign of a non-ige mediated allergy, often to cows milk protein.

alittleworriedlamb · 21/02/2024 20:15

Teething makes poo smell like vinegar.

LazJaz · 21/02/2024 20:18

possibly CMPA?
lots of HV don’t know a great deal
about CMPA - definitely suggest doing some research yourself too. It’s much more common than many people believe.
the only way to really know is to cut out all animal milk products, eggs and soy cold turkey from your own diet and then see if baby’s poops and vomiting improve.

My daughters poor went green due to allergies and teething.

Knowledge on allergies especially with breastfeed babies is lacking. My GP didn't know the difference between lactose intolerance and cmpa. Lactose intolerance makes breastfed babies very poorly where as there is a wide range in how cmpa impacts babies. I would start a food diary and see if there are any patterns in the reflux and green poos. It can take 3 days to see an effect of eating a food.

I’ve had 3 cmpa babies and Green mucousy poo is definitely a sign. But mine also all had painful tummies and lots of unsettled behaviour that cleared up when milk was cut out. Agree with the food diary. Mine also had different levels of sensitivity. One was fine unless it was a large quantity of uncooked milk (eg a yogurt or milk) while another would scream for hours if I had trace amounts in a biscuit or something.

Has she recently had the Rotarix vaccine?

Getoutgetout · 21/02/2024 20:31

My EBF baby had consistently green poo. Spoke to HV and GP who said if otherwise no issues it wasn’t a problem. She’s 7 now and no allergies or intolerances etc.

Mazuslongtoenail · 21/02/2024 20:31

I’ve had plenty of nappies like that with two babies who have no allergies.

It may have coincided with colds I think, because I seem to recall a comment from a doctor about babies swallow their mucus and poo it out because they can’t blow their noses, but I couldn’t be 100% sure.

Ak5506 · 22/02/2024 08:13

She has been extremely congested so that could be it! Thanks x
