Toddler broken tooth

My little girl had chipped her two front teeth at nursery today and I’m absolutely gutted! It’s quite bad, there’s a significant amount of tooth missing and I’m worried they extract both of them.

I’ve got her a dentist appointment for the morning but had anybody got any idea what they might do with this

Oh bless you. How did you get on at the dentist? My son (20 months old) has just chipped his already chipped tooth 😫 going back to the dentist on Thursday as a follow up from the first time he did it…

@NH2024 she said there isn’t much they can do, just keep an eye out for infection. Even if the nerve is damaged and tooth goes black they need to keep it in place for as long as possible. Sorry to hear your little one chipped an already chipped tooth, these babies sure do like to test us 🫣

That happened to us when she was 1, had then extracted a few years later as they caused her pain. now 8 and big ones just starting to grow through.
I was devastated at first as she'd just finished teething them! but quickly got used to it and it made her cuter having nothing there, she got a lisp and it's so sweet.

@Disturbia81 Ahh bless her, hopefully her adult teeth are coming through ok and not there’s no damage to them. I’m still very much in the devastated stage! I’m still so angry at the nursery she teethed so hard for those teeth and I’ve always been so on top of her oral hygiene 😫 feels like such a waste! She can already say words with ‘S’ in so hopefully it won’t affect her speech too much. She’s due to be back in nursery for the first time since the accident, I really don’t want to take her in 😞

DD chipped a front tooth badly at age 3. Dentist extracted the broken bit, left the stub in place. It came out naturally at the right time and an adult tooth came through without issues

@ChinChilly I found it really hard to take dd back after she had an accident at nursery that gave her a scar on her face. I was so worried about letting her out of my sight.

3 years later, ds tried to run up the slide and cracked his chin off the side - all under my supervision - and wound up with a cracking scar :-(

Unless you have worries the nursery are neglectful, let them know your worries on drop off and ask that they send you a little more reassurance throughout the day. Hope your LO has a lovely day. 💐

@Nevermindtheteacaps ahh thank you, that’s reassuring to hear.

@CuntRYMusicStar ohh no! What a shame! These children are sent to test us haha. I have some concerns mainly that they don’t know how she ended up cracking her teeth which says to me they weren’t paying attention. I have a few niggling concerns, just minor things but I’ve laid down the law with them and told them if I don’t see a immediate marked improvement I won’t hesitate to remove her and take appropriate action. They’ve started an investigation into the accident with her teeth, another branch manager is investigating with a health and safety rep to make sure it is impartial… so we will see what the outcome is, either way it’s not going to magic her teeth back.

I would take that as a huge positive that they have escalated and are doing a full investigation. I hope they set your mind at rest. At least it was her baby teeth, friends I know whose LOs chipped baby teeth have had no issues with their big teeth when they come through.

My daughter chipped one of her front teeth, not once but twice, and I never knew when she’d done it (though she had an unfortunate habit of falling flat on her face as a toddler!).

she is 8 now and has her adult tooth in place but it was a bit of a saga over the years - the tooth did turn grey but barely noticeable. She got a large abscess in the gum at around age 5 and the dentist attempted to remove the tooth but she refused the needle (as it was already wobbly, we didn’t think necessary/proportionate to have a general anaesthetic to remove). The tooth did not fall out! The adult tooth then started to come through age 7 but in the roof of her mouth a good cm behind the infant tooth - so the dentist tried again and removed the dead tooth successfully. The adult tooth did come forward by itself and looks normal but is still wonky - though we think because of overcrowding with other infant teeth still in place so hope it rectifies itself, if not then braces will be needed!

Honestly these children 🙈 it sounds so common (I found so many posts about it when I spent the night googling “toddler chipped tooth” after it first happened 😂) both times it has happened my little boy has literally been right in front of me I just wasn’t quick enough to catch him, so understand why you feel nervous about your little going back to nursery, but good that they’re looking in it properly!
In the grand scheme of things a chipped baby tooth is such a minor thing but it feels devastating when it happens! So nice to hear other kids adult teeth have come through ok 🤞🏻 as this is my biggest worry!
