28 week scan, head on 98th percentile

Anyone else had a baby measuring with a bigger head????

My baby is showing as 98th percentile for head.

My partner has a big head and was mentioned when he was a baby 32 years ago.

So it could be genetics, and I'm worried waiting for my midwife to contact me back.

It was done at a private scan....

Yes! My son was 50th for everything but 98th for head. I too was worried but the sonographers and midwives never were. They said its still "normal" but just on the top end. Everything is fine - I have beautiful, healthy DC and head looks in proportion to body.

Yep! We had a 98th centile head and still do at 16m! I do have quite a large head tho…

no issues with him or his development at all - except having to buy a bigger hat 😂

his head always measured much larger at scans than the other measurements - tummy/femur and overall weight etc but by the time I gave birth he was born on the 80th centile for weight and 98th for height. He now tracks on the 91st for height and weight and 98 for his beautiful head.

98th for head cirumference here; average baby weight. I'm super slim and giving birth to that was not a good time 😅

No health issues. Just a big head. I like to tell myself he's super smart.

These numbers are usually rough estimates. I remember in one of the scans, her head was actually measuring smaller than the scan taken a month before it. :D

Though it is a good idea to exercise caution and ask your midwife about it.

Let us know how it goes. :)

Didn’t show up on scans but both of mine had head circumference on 99.6th centile at birth (went down to 91st or 98th after a bit I think). I suspect main cause of me having two 3rd degree tears. Their heads are perfectly normal shaped and sized to look at though they do wear adult sized hats at 8 and 11. Both academic and there’s a strong link between head circumference and intelligence 🤣

Oh god OP, this is me. My baby also measured on 98th percentile for head (and belly) at 28 weeks. I'm now 35 weeks and having another scan next week to check on size.

Very concerned to see women here who had similar sized babies reporting large tears. If my baby is measuring similarly next week I'm going to talk to my consultant about a c-section - I am not a large person!

Two babies, average weight and 95th and 98th centile for head respectively.

The youngest was wearing age 10 hats at 5, she's got a big head I supposed but it's not remotely noticeable.

Bovrilla · 21/02/2024 20:33

Yeah I had bad 2nd degree tears with both but to caveat I had to have my waters broken with both and then they were RAPID births after that point which definitely did not help matters!
