A couple of dumb questions about toddler clothes?

These are probably dumb questions but I’m curious about how other dress their 1.5-2 year old toddlers.

DD is 19 months but outgrowing her 18-24 popper vests. Do I buy more or transition away from them? She still wears them under pyjamas and as a bottom layer most days as they are handy for keeping the nappy on and keeping her warm if her T-shirt rides up. Not many brands seem to sell them in bigger than 18-24 months (although I think I saw some at H&M) so I guess not many people use them at this age?

We are going on a hot holiday soon and she has some dresses. Do you put shorts or bloomers under them or just the nappy. I’m thinking about the practicality of keeping the nappy on and stopping her trying to undo it than modesty or anything like that. I can only see shorts and silly frilly bloomers, no normal pants for wearing over nappies.

This is about the age I transitioned mine from popper vests to regular ones. Can't say we've ever had problems with the nappy coming off and it does make checking the nappy much quicker!

For the same reason you probably don't need anything under a dress, though if your DD is prone to pulling at her nappy a pair of shorts wouldn't hurt. I usually put leggings under dressed on mine but then I'm nowhere hot!

I’ve used popper vests with my first until 3! Plan on doing the same with my youngest. I get larger sizes from next, bonds or Ralph Lauren. He’s still wearing 18-24 months thankfully so hoping we have a little while until he outgrows them fully. They’re just so handy!

I usually put plain thin leggings or cycling shorts under a dress. Her dress spends a lot of time over her head, and bare legs aren't very nice on slides, swings etc. Also she loves taking her nappy off and this slows her down a bit. Will probably drop this for toilet training.

Ditched the vests when she outgrew 18-24m clothes.

Do you have a problem with the nappy coming off or is it just something you're wary of? I can't say mine have ever been in danger of coming off and I ditched the vests at 12mo as I couldn't abide the poppers any longer! X

We used the popper vests as long as they were in nappies.

In hot weather I didn't use vests, but if I wanted to secure the nappy under a dress (and I do think they look uncomfortable sometimes) then a pair of shorts or cycle shorts will do the trick.

InTheRainOnATrain · 20/02/2024 13:55

Regular vests, if they’re needed, but in warmer weather I find they’re not because they don’t need the extra layer now they’re mobile. I always put cycling shorts or leggings depending on weather under DD’s dresses. Sure it would be more practical to just have her in shorts but she wanted the dresses and I hate the look of the nappy on show.

Both DD's potty trained a couple of months after turning 2. Untill then I used sleeveless poppered vests under regular T-shirts or short-sleeved ones as the T-shirts. Under a summer dress I used a strappy poppered vest but preferred a short sleeved poppered vest with shorts over the top instead.

During and after potty training we switched to ordinary vests in Winter and no vests in Summer. In Summer they just wear nice thick, well fitting pants under a Summer dress. They don't care if they show sometimes. In Winter they wear pants, ordinary vests and tights under dresses.

We stopped around then as we potty trained and you don’t want to be undoing poppers when they need to use the potty!

AegonT · 20/02/2024 13:59

I think M&S and at least one of the supermarkets stock aged 2-3 poppered vests.

Jandob · 20/02/2024 14:07

You will be potty training soon so pull ups are useful. Poppers are not easy for this.

bakewellbride · 20/02/2024 14:10

Dd is nearly 2 and still in popper vests, Sainsburys sell them.

GooseClues · 20/02/2024 14:28

H&M sells bloomer shorts that are great over nappies.

From 2y you start thinking about potty training or at least getting the child to dress themselves. Popper vests are very impractical for that.
