Transitioning baby into own room

Just that really. How did you transition your baby into their own room? Any tips? I feel very nervous about this.

My son is almost 5 months and I've started trying to put him into his own room for naps but he doesn't settle well. We've been doing it consistently for a couple of weeks (using the sound machine and sleeping bag he uses in his next to me) but he only catnaps.

I'm not sure I'll be able to hold out until 6 months, despite me wanting to, as he really has outgrown his next to me. He might have a couple more weeks at best!

Moving his cot into our room isn't an option as it physically won't fit. We have a small bedroom.

Advice?

5-6 mo don't care where they sleep. Just do it and, in the kindest possible way, don't overthink it.

100% agree with this.

When I moved my kids, I just moved them into their cot. They were all fine.

Hiya,

The catnaps are most likely down to your LO’s age rather than the environment. 4 months is notorious catnap age. My LO was the same. He was really long and outgrew his next to me by 5 months and get waking himself up hitting the sides.

We consistently did naps in his cot and around 5 months he went down for the night in there too, we were doing his bedtime routine (book and cuddles etc) in his room from 3 months to get him used
to it.

I kept the next to me up just incase in the night I needed to bring him in with us but honestly he slept like a log in his cot from the first night. I think we were disturbing him when he was in our room and waking him up quite frequently. he always slept with blackout curtains in our room so I guess he didn’t know any different really.

If he’s going to sleep happy in his cot for naps (regardless of the length) I’d say chances are he will happily go down in there for the night also x

@Thelazygardener thanks for this. Was very helpful.

I think I'll have to start next week when he's just shy of 5 months as he's completely outgrown his next to me 😞

We moved our first out of room at about 12 weeks - would have been earlier, but we didn't have curtains ready - and we all seemed to sleep better after that.

@UnravellingTheWorld is spot on - it is a bigger deal for you that it is for them!

This. Your nerves are the most unhelpful. Put him there and leave him to sleep.
