Anyone have a small baby when you and partner are not small?

My DD was born weighing 5lb15, I was induced at 38 weeks because my bump hadn't grown from previous measuring and it was a bit of a shock because my first DD was born 4 days late weighing 8lb5.

DD is now 7 months and still small, she is very happy and alert, meeting her milestones (maybe a tiny bit slower e.g she's not close to crawling yet), but I just worry all the time because she's small and she wears a clothes size or 2 behind her age.

My DHs sister was apparently a small baby, and he wasn't the biggest, so perhaps my DD has inherited that gene from DH's side.

Anyone else have a similar situation?

Hi my baby was born on the 25th centile even though we are tall. I think size of baby is to do with how well the placenta works and that they then stay on their centile until 2 years after which point they start to move more towards their genetic potential size. As long as your baby is tracking their growth line its all good. That's how they explained it at my local weigh and play drop in.

My son was born ten days early and weighed 6.5lbs. He was always on the small side in his 1st year (4th centile on the growth chart). He is a slim but tall 12 year old now. I'm one of 3 siblings and we were all quite small babies but all tall as adults.

Did they say anything about your placenta when you had her? My daughter was born on the 1st centile but they said the placenta didn't look good. She was petite as a baby/toddler but now is one of the tallest in her reception class

My baby was born small. 5lb15oz at 37+4 and dropped to 5lb3oz. She is now 2.5 and still in 12-18 months clothes (9%) but she is SO strong and active! Met all her milestones, above her age for speech, super adventurous, just a little whirlwind! I'm 5ft 6 and 62kg so not 'small' just average.

Thanks so much for the replies! This has made me feel lots better.

I've googled before and it seemed like people with small babies were also small parents.

I did hear most small babies catch up by around 2 years old if not early childhood.

They never said anything about my placenta but it did seem like it just stopped working because I remember noticing around the 36 week mark I wasn't half as hungry and thirsty as I had been.

I have an appointment with the HV next week to check DD over to (hopefully) relieve my worries, but this has cheered me up in the mean time xx

I am small 5ft2 but my partner is 6ft. My daughter is 1st percentile for height which would put her smaller than me at predictive adult. She is 3.5 and mostly in 18-24month clothes but in some 12-18 months clothes. My friends 2nd baby aged 13 months has gone into some clothes by daughter has just outgrown and her first born is the same age as my daughter!

Although my partner is now tall he was the smallest in his class until he reached puberty.

My sister has the exact opposite she is 5ft4. Ex-husband is about 5ft8. Daughter is 13 and already 5ft5 and on the 75th percentile for height. She's likely to far exceed mum and likely dad too. She was 8lb 10ish at birth. I'm one of three and as a baby her mum was the smallest and didn't reach the 0.4th percentile until she was 1 and at 10weeks old she weighed 1lb less than her daughter did at birth! By 2 she was around the 50th percentile so caught up
