night time dryness - anyone just taken the nappy away and hey presto - dry?

my mum was telling me about a friend of hers whose little girl got potty training straight away, never had one accident. After a couple of weeks she questioned why she was still putting a nappy on her at night, and decided to leave it off. next morning she was dry. Just wondered if this was a one off or if others had this experience. She was a couple of months of 2 1/2. My ds is 2 1/2 and had a similar experience with pull ups. To him they felt like a nappy, so he weed in 'em, but managed fine in actual pants, which is kind of the same theory. Anyway, would be grateful for your experiences.

dd1 was dry at night from the time I forgot to put her nappy on

dd2 and ds still need a nighttime nappy though - dd2 has asked to have a potty in her room because she wakes up but doesn't want to go to the toilet.

She has a potty.

And a full nappy still.

Nemoandthefishes · 23/03/2008 20:52

DD1 did this..she was 2 the week before and we started potty training that night I forgot nappy and she hasnt had one since.

oh and DS I just tried him about 3mths after day training he was 2.5yrs he wet the bed one night and that was it.

hoxtonchick · 23/03/2008 20:53

we did this with my ds. kind of unintentionally as we ran out of nappies one day when he was just 4 (had been dry in the day since 2.5). he'd never had a dry nappy overnight but assured me he didn't need them any more. i was unconvinced, but he proved me wrong. he's 6 now, & has wet the bed about twice since then. go for it!

ps have just day-trained dd who's 2.8. 50% of the time her nappy is dry in the morning. but as she co-sleeps with us i haven't quite been brave enough to leave it off yet....

FrannyandZooey · 23/03/2008 20:59

yes more or less, but we waited until ds was nearly 5 and it has meant he wakes up very early to have a wee

I think 2.5 is very young but try if you want to!

Flibbertyjibbet · 23/03/2008 21:03

I think it depends on the child. Ds1 thought that if he wore a nappy it was ok to wee, so if we left it off he didn't wee. About 3 months after day training.
We are going to be starting ds2 potty training soon and I am fully aware that he may not be the same.
In fact I'm off to start my thread on ds2 now....

BigBadMouse · 23/03/2008 21:08

Yep. This is what happened with my DD1 at 3. I just bought her some pants, put them on and that was it - potty training done (after many trips to the potty on the first day ). No accidents. Within a week she was sleeping in pants too (I had put her in cloth training pants at night from Day 1 of the 'training').

It was lovely, totally stress free. Bet I don't get this lucky with the other DCs!

Thanks everybody. I think I will give day time dryness a couple of months to bed in, and then try. It was just that as he was cleaning his teeth in readyness for bed he had that slightly concentrated look on his face and without thinking, because I've been on the watch for this now for several days to prompt, I said 'are you weeing' and he looked a bit worried and said 'yes'. I reassured him that is was okay coz he had his bed time nappy on and that we were only working on doing day time wee's and poo's in the potty right now, and that we would do night time later, which seemed to settle him. But after my mum's comments it did make me wonder.

I think some children don't like weeing in their night nappy once they've been potty-trained, it stresses them out. My DD1 was potty-trained at 2.7 months, and was dry at night by 2.8 months. She got very agitated if she weeed in her night nappy so in the end we left it off. This did mean early mornings though, but since DD2 came along that's normal anyway! DD1 is a rather highly strung kind of a gal though, so she may be atypical.

One of my friends potty trained her son at just 2.1 years, and he was dry at night by 2.2 years. I was very , but he still uses a dummy at nearly 4 so he's not perfect thankfully. (Coco cackles evilly.)

dandycandyjellybean · 23/03/2008 21:34

Yes, my ds still has a dummy for his day time naps, when he is in mummy's bed (usually in the morning and after naps watching bob the builer, elmo and hairy bikers who he loves!!!!) and in the car. He absolutely loves his dummy, and would have it all the time if I didn't insist he only has it at those times!!! Once we've got the nappy thing sorted I guess that's the next thing. Since I've never allowed him to have it at night, I figured once he drops his day time naps, (hopefully not til he starts school he he) we can drop his dummy. we'll see.....

Actually, he had his creche ladies in stitches telling them 'I've been watching hairy bikers on mummy's bed'!!!

I use cloth nappies, so DD could feel if she had weed. Once she was potty trained in the day (2.5) I waited til she was dry at night a few days running then asked her if she wanted to try nappy pants instead and basically just put a booster inside a wrap - i.e. if she wet it it felt really wet. And it didn't take long til she was dry at night and asking to have no pants at all - I had explained to her that grown ups don't wear pants or nappy pants at night.

JingleyJen · 23/03/2008 21:46

DS1 had been dry for a few weeks iirc, he had started taking his nappy off himself at 3-4am and going to the toilet so one night we just asked him if he wanted to try without it he said yes.

We nudged him to the loo at 11pm as we went to bed for a couple of weeks but forgot a couple of nights and he didn't have any accidents.

He regressed after DS2 was born for 10 days but no worries.
Good luck!

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 23/03/2008 21:48

I'm lucky (maybe?) I tried to offer my DDs dummies but they wouldn't take them. Meant they wailed non-stop for months (especially DD1) but I never had to go through the weaning-them-off stage.

dandycandyjellybean · 23/03/2008 21:53

There's definitely a theme here isn't there....?

Yep ds was waking with dry nappies maybe a few days after he cracked day time dryness. He had awful nappy rash so I decided to get rid of the nappies at night even though I'd have waited otherwise and he was fine. I'm pretty surprised he can hold it in all night. He has woken slightly earlier than he used to as he needs a wee though.

This was a couple of weeks ago and he's 2.9. I hope I'm not tempting fate for a first accident tonight!
