9 week old trapped wind

Hi all,

I know trapped wind is super common with babies until their digestive system matures but we were up hourly last night as DD just could not settle as she was bloated, straining and really quite unhappy about it all. She had a tongue tie which was snipped but has left her with a high arched palette so even with a good latch, she still clicks and takes in air when she's feeding.

Not looking for suggestions on how to help really, we always make sure we burp (and do this in different positions), sit her upright for 15+ minutes after every feed, bicycle legs, tummy massages etc

Just wanted people's experiences of when did this stop for your little one? Google reckons around 3 months but want to know if this is an accurate representation of what people have experienced! ty

DS has just turned 3 months and is still very much struggling with trapped wind. I've actually bought some probiotics to try him with while we wait for it to settle down. I can't fully remember with DD but I think it was around about the 4 month mark it settled down. DD suffered with reflux though so we were more focused on that with her than the trapped wind. Fingers crossed both our LOs get those mature digestive systems soon.

My boy now 12 months had this and it stopped around 3/4months. Just had to ride it out sadly. It’s so tough!!
I feel for you xx

Still going on for me at 10 weeks. Every night if he wakes after 4am it's game over. Come 6am he's usually unhappily awake unless I intervene. Holding him so he's lying on his side/ stomach helps move the gas.

I used to sit with their back to my chest and bounce their legs gently up and down. Just a gentle amount of pressure on the tummy. It helped a lot.

If you’re bottle feeding, the comfort aptimel helped me with my daughter.. I’m sure other brands have similar easy to digest feeds.. and for breastfeeding my son, I had to give up all dairy as he was riddled with excema. . And that worked for us.. also gripe water..

Hi @Lxii62 just wandering when he did grow out of it as I am in the same position and absolutely exhausted xx

Littleredracecar · 13/03/2025 09:36

Sorry to hear you’ve had such a rough night. Have you heard of infant dyschezia? It does normally pass by around 3 months but it can be exhausting while it lasts. Hope you manage to get some rest today.

I think we used something called Infacol (?) back in the day

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/03/2025 09:41

There was a medicine called infacol years ago, not sure if it’s still available. It did help.

Cattery · 13/03/2025 09:55

@MrsSkylerWhite Snap!

Negangirlxx · 13/03/2025 09:58

My DD is almost 5 months, and STILL struggles with trapped wind. Avoid Infacol. It made my baby a lot worse. I even took her to the doctor at 4 months as she still cries for ages, some nights. She’s on the special Comfort milk which did help, we also swapped to Mam bottles. The only thing we can do according to doc is massage her tummy, do bicycle legs, bath her, and give her gripe water, just the usual suggestions. Apparently, it should stop by about 6 months, when she starts to move more. It’s just a case of dealing with it. Not what you want to hear, but some babies just struggle with wind more than others, and I was unlucky enough to end up with a very windy baby!

Sorry to hear you're in the same position! I'd say it started getting better around 3.5 months and then got a lot better around 6/7 months when she moved onto solids.

We found bicycle legs gave some relief but not much and massaging her feet seemed to help (not sure on the science of that!). She also had reflux and would spit up A LOT. She was combifed and we used kendamil. We found that the instant/ready to use milk really exasperated the symptoms and we began using colief in her bottles which we felt did really help. It's a bit of a faff because you need to add the drops half an hour before feeding them but it definitely had an impact.

Hope it passes quickly for you and if it's any comfort (I know if probably won't be!) I barely remember it now. She is so much happier in herself now but 0-3months for us was very hard and definitely wasn't the newborn baby bubble that other speak of.
