Brain surgery

My boy has a date for brain surgery in just over a week, the kids in his class are naturally full of colds etc would I be totally unhinged to keep him off school until he's had the op? I'm torn as he enjoys school but I also know if he's ill they'll delay it. Delaying it means it will turn into an emergency (life threatening)within a few weeks. What would you do?

Sorry you find yourself in your situation
i dont think you’d be unreasonable to keep him off however my two sons (8 and 10) get colds all the time and tbh barely notice. Get very slightly sniffly. But if your son does get properly ill with colds then yeah keep him off.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/02/2024 09:07

In any case, I don’t think you’d be remotely unhinged to keep him off

I would keep him off…no doubt

Keep him off. My parents did the sand when I had a relatively minor op.

Yep keep him off. Justified and sensible. Best of luck to you and your family for surgery day and beyond.

popncrisps · 18/02/2024 09:32

It wouldn't have even occurred to me to send him in - when my dad had to go for life saving treatment they said he had to try and avoid people in the two weeks prior for this very reason.

Thank you, sometimes it's hard not to worry you're being THAT parent.

100% keep him off, and if you have any siblings in school I would do the same or have them stay at grandparents etc. Sell it as a fun week/holiday

CadyEastman · 18/02/2024 14:36

There's nothing unreasonable at all about keeping him off.

Meadowy · 18/02/2024 14:37

yes Keep him off - and siblings.

craigth162 · 18/02/2024 14:37

Feel free to ignore but what surgery is it? My son has shunt fitted and has had a few brain surgeries for this. I would 100% keep him off. Its not worth the risk. Ben got operated on during height of covid and delays were awful and terrifying

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 18/02/2024 15:47

@craigth162 it's a double shunt replacement including tube (he's has 17 before but we've had 4 years of him being ok with it) so it's been a while!

Keep him off. It's too much of a risk to send him to school.
Wishing him all the very best for his operation.

Fingers crossed for you. We're 3 years since last replacement

Zaranj · 18/02/2024 16:37

Definitely keep him off and any siblings. Best wishes. Definitely not an irrational thing to do.

Flowermoon90 · 18/02/2024 17:02

I'd definitely keep him off school. There are some nasty bugs going around, so it would be the right thing to do IMO.

17 surgeries ? Poor him and poor you. I’ve known people go decades with one shunt so fingers crossed that happens for you
