Anglo-Dutch families in SE London?

Hello, we live in E Dulwich. My husband is Dutch and I'm English, barely speaking a word of Dutch I'm afraid. We would love our DS (5 months) to be bilingual and it would be great to meet up with other families with one or more Dutch parents.... Also any tips on Dutch-speaking opportunities in London much appreciated. Is there anyone there?

www.toplanguagecommunity.com/dutch-portal
seems to be a Dutch community website where you'll probably be able to find other Dutch Mums.

Hi, only just came across this thread. My husband is also Dutch, I'm English, and my Dutch is pretty limited. My husband speaks to our DD (8 months tomorrow)in Dutch. I'm not sure she'll be billingual, but I think she'll have a pretty good grasp of the language.

hI

I'm in the opposite camp, as I live in the netherlands but am british. I speak only english to the children and my husband only dutch.

They are both perfectly bilingual. The trick is to keep the languages totally sperate and make sure your dh reads to the children in dutch and you get some dutch language dvd's etc so they have some other exposure to it.

their english will be better than their dutch as they live in the uk (as my children definitely speak better dutch than english for that reason), but it will still be good enough!

good luck

I also live in NL, but am British. To make things more confusing, my DH is German. Again, like HWhisperer, I speak only English, DH speaks only German. LO is exposed to Dutch at kindergarten.

Just keep it consistent, have clear lines between who speaks what, and there (should) will be less confusion separating the two/three languages in your child's head....

My DS's English was better when in London, now the German is catching up. I am pretty confident his understanding of both will end up being balanced.

It is sometimes hard though, trying to work out whether my child is saying 'look' in Dutch (kijk), or 'cake' in English, or biscuit in German-- similar word again.... for example(!) :0) Argh!!

Also, in answer to the original OP, living in SW London, I came across a good number of Dutch/part Dutch families, so I think it should be easy to find others to 'hang out' with. Don't know of any groups though, but am sure there will be some in your area.

contact the Dutch embassy, they are very helpful (also good website)
There are many Dutch groups in the UK.
There's a Dutch community in London with a Dutch church, also organises Sinterklaas.
Also, there are many Dutch after-school lessons.
Ivio ( see website) is a distance school , they do Dutch lessons for children.
They now also have lessons for children like yours.
There's the Dutch toddler- group in Woking, they meet every Thursday.
There is Dutch nursery (Montessori) somewhere in London and the Dutch school in Woking.

Thank you so much in advance!
Also, any information on Dutch communities for kids, playgroups, after school or weekend clubs or similar, would be greatly appreciated!!!
