My 6yo autistic kid generally has very large firm poos into nappies. Sometimes they can be soft and sticky but never diarrhea-like. He goes every 2 days, occasionally up to 3. Occasionally they are like rabbit droppings like the last one. I knew that it wasn't ideal, but I thought it was due to changes in diet, and we have been worrying about so many other things with him at the same time.
I have just been reading the ERIC website - I didn't realise constipation meant being backed up and distending the bowel. Going by the last poo, he's severely constipated. Is that right, given that the two before that were very firm and soft and sticky, and that his poos can change consistency?
Secondly, if we do a disimpaction, is it best to wait until the holidays, Easter being 5 weeks away, or should we get it done asap? Will it affect his routine of when he goes (at home) or is he at risk of soiling himself at school? He's still going through a transition period at school and it's all a bit fragile, and I'm worried about the impact on that, though of course is health is the priority.
Waiting to hear back from ERIC and the GP, just hoping to get advice from parents with experience.
