Would you keep your child off school for this reason?

7 year old DD has had a terrible cough all week, especially at night. Last night was something else - I don't think any of us got more than a couple of hours broken sleep, she was non stop. She's exhausted today so I have kept her off school - I work from home so I haven't had to have a day off myself (although I would love to 😴).
The only thing is, she's absolutely fine in herself other than the cough and tiredness. I'm worried I should have sent her in...

You're absolutely right to keep her off. The poor kid needs some rest.

I'd keep her off too. Has she seen the Pharmacist?

No but we've got a doctors apt in an hour. She gets a cough like this every winter and they never help really, just say she will grow out of it. She's fine the rest of the time but when it's bad... its bad

Absolutely I'd have kept her off too! If she is exhausted, how much would she actually learn in school today? Plus if it is a virus she would be spreading it to everyone every time she coughed.
She is 7 which is still very little!

Would an inhaler help her? It might be worth asking the doctor.

I've had 'just' a cough for a couple of weeks. Last week it got to my last working day and I was so exhausted, brain foggy, legs felt like they were wrapped in concrete. I called in sick and proceeded to sleep for 4 hours. Although no other symptoms, absolutely fine to keep her off.

Yes I’d keep a child off for that.

It'd probably a viral infection, my daughter had this & is in fact still recovering from it. She was coughing for 2 wwwks before I took her to the doctor, she burst a blood vessel coughing so much (so it looked like she coughed up blood).
The doctor said its a viral infection, nothing we can do, but definitely keep her off school as she can infect others.
Sorry she actually gave her an inhaler for morning & night & said to buy 2 different types of cough medicine. The wet one for the day & the dry one to try suppress the cough at night.
We kept her off a week, the cough still wasn't better after that but then we sent her back.
She's still not 100 percent better & it's weeks later.
She literally had no other symptoms though just this constant cough & constant coughing at night.
Best of luck!

Totally. Let her rest and sleep and lots to drink. If you weren’t seeing the doc I might have suggested an antihistamine as can reduce the coughing.

7yo, exhausted... whats she going to actually learn?

My 10yo had a similar thing recently. Same every winter, she was ill as a baby. I was all prepared to have her off, but she wanted to go. I did withdraw her from after school sports though.

We've been given them in the past to try but it never made a difference. I think essentially whenever she has a slight cold, she gets a nasal drip which causes the cough which is always worse at night. She never ever gets a runny nose, it runs down her throat instead. But I am going to press it again today, she has this so often and it really impacts her sleep.

Oh wow bless her! It does sound similar. She's actually just asked me if she can go to school this afternoon and I'm not sure what to do.

Yes, absolutely keep her off. She must be exhausted. Just leave her home to chill and do her own thing 🙂

My 4yo gets like that sometimes. Fine during the day but coughs a lot during the night which keeps her awake. I've kept her off a few times the day after.

Hope she's better soon.

My daughter is the same.... every single winter. It is slightly better than it used to be but she always always gets a cough for months

So, I'd say "No you need to stay off and rest today, but if you can do that and have a reasonable night tonight, then you can go in tomorrow!"

How is she now? Hoping she's on the mend x

PTSDBarbiegirl · 18/02/2024 09:00

She's unwell and should be off until better. Nobody will thank you for the rest of the class getting unwell and adults stuck with another infection for months. Your child needs rest.
