Can anyone make sense of this letter?

Excuse the crumbledness!

I received this with my daughter's report from her first intensive interaction session and I don't know if I'm just being really dim but what does it mean? What won't they be able to do? I'm so confused. I feel like I'm missing something here because I just don't get it.

Can anyone make sense of this letter?

So in an EHCP, there's "section F" which lists all of the things that a child needs and must be done by other professionals for them to access education etc. this is saying that they've identified something that they're proposing is included in "section F" however can't be provided by the NHS salt service. Sometimes as it's in F and is therefore legally binding you can push for the local authority to source and fund it privately as it's a recommendation from a professional

I read it as something like: "We will tell you what we think is needed. These other people need to agree for those things to happen. If they don't agree, we will try to help but we won't be able to provide the things we think are needed."

ETA: in other words I think they're trying to prepare you for potential disappointment even after what might seem like success. But I'm a pessimistic person…

You should be aware that an ehc assessment is going on now as you would have had to give consent? The ehc assessment team will have asked the speech and language therapists for a report on your child's needs.
It seems like they are saying 'we are saying that he needs a certain amount of support but we don't have capacity to provide what we are saying he needs so the council will need to find someone else to provide it'

It’s hard to say without seeing the report but it sounds like they are saying she needs something else as well as SALT?

It might be worth getting the title of this thread changed to include EHCP - you might get more responses from people with experience.

Yes her EHCP deadline is the 3rd of March so it's concluding now, she needs quite a few different areas of support not just speech and language so maybe that's what it means, she didn't speak at all untill almost 3 and now she's almost 4 and speaks only in echolalia from peppa pig, she's also delayed in social interaction other areas

It's a back covering letter so you don't assume that meeting the SALT means you're getting an EHCP or that the SALT will offer any treatment. The SALT will assess what support your child needs (the current unmet communication needs) and put them in the report for the EHCP. As communication support needs are not the only part of the plan it is possible that although your child has unmet needs in this area they won't qualify for an EHCP. The SALT team doesn't have capacity to offer treatment as well as assessment so the needs would be met either by school staff where that were possible or by additional bought in (private) provision paid for by the local authority under the EHCP if granted.

This is the best explanation

It's so confusing for parents

Just received a letter for a review appointment with community peads.

says due to the nature of the conversation being sensitive, children aren't to attend and to bring a supportive adult along if neccesary. Is this her diagnosis appointment?

It does sound like it, yes.
How are you feeling?

Helpmeout124 · 17/02/2024 14:56

I'm not sure, I'm okay, it's the 18th of March though so I have a whole month to stew on it 😬
