Hi my little one is turning one soon, I’m unsure when to go for the first trim. What age did your babies have their first hair cut?

I don't think it's a specific age, it's just when the hair starts to look untidy or get in their eyes.

Agree with pp. Depends on how it looks, and also whether the ends are getting damaged.

My eldest had tons of hair so his first trim was 5 months. My youngest lost all his hair and regrew, but it's also curly so had taken a while to look too long. Trimmed it at 18 months.

Mine is 2 and a half and still hasn't had one

My DS was about 15 months to get his fringe out of his eyes Smile

My dd is nearly 2 and never had it done. I think ds was 2 or maybe 2 and a half, can't remember.

DD1 didn’t have hair for about two years and even then it took two years to get to any kind of cuttable length, so we didn’t cut it until she was about 4.

DD2 came out with a head full of jet black hair standing on its end 😂 looked like a punk. It’s now down to below her shoulders and there were a few months where it was in her eyes if left down, but we just tied the front up for a few months and now it’s long enough to sweep out of her eyes. I feel like her hair is part of who she is, as she was born with so much of it, so I feel she’ll be at Hagrid stage before I even consider cutting it 😆 she’s 2 in May.

I think it depends on the child, how you feel and how it looks. If DD2 was irritated by having so much hair or looked like a scruff, I’d obviously cut it.

My 2 had hair cuts before 1 year as they were born with lots of hair

Son had his first haircut around 20 months, just before our second holiday. We just went to a regular barbers in our local town. They have a tiny dog and a fish tank so son is always happy to go there. We didn't bother with looking for places who specialise in children or have a car chair or anything like that.

I think it was aged about 16-17 months. In lockdown, so was more something to do than out of any real necessity.

Alarae · 15/02/2024 10:17

Pretty sure the first one was around 3 for DD, but that was because she has extremely curly hair so even though it grew, the curls just got tighter so the length never changed!

I've only just taken her for another trim about 8 months later as her hair is still filling out. It was mainly because the front curls were getting too long and falling in her eyes (whereas the back is still at above shoulder level).

Not so much how long is a piece of string and more how long is the piece of hair....

My daughter has been a baldilocks and at 3.5 hasn't had a haircut and it's not on the cards for a while. When she was born the midwife had a moment of doubt whether she was head or bum first

tutttutt · 15/02/2024 11:09

5!!!! She had blonde curls and I knew she would never have curls again and that her hair would not be blonde for long!!! She has the most incredible thick shiny straight dark brown hair now

InTheRainOnATrain · 15/02/2024 11:12

9 months for DS as it looked a state. DH and I both have thick curly hair so poor kid had no chance! 6 years for DD though as we rode out that phase with a hairclip or headband, then she simply didn’t want one.

IggOrEgg · 15/02/2024 11:16

Whenever you like really. My boy is 2y4m and hasn’t had a haircut as his hair is very curly so doesn’t get in his eyes, plus he barely had any hair at all til he was 12 months, whereas my nephew, who’s always had a good head of hair, has had at least 3 or 4 haircuts and he’s only 9 months. I guess part of it is just that his mum prefers shorter hair but it’s also getting him used to haircuts from a young age.. I do wonder what my boy will think about it when I finally get his hair cut 😂

My daughter was almost 1. Her fringe was getting in her eyes and looked a mess.
