Toddler sleeping bag?

At what age are we meant to be stopping the sleeping bag?

Ds is 20 months. He absolutely will not entertain a duvet or know that he has to put it back on himself

Also he sometimes kicks the sleeping bag off...

So what other options do i have?

My dd is 3 and still in a sleep sack! She’d kick a duvet off in the first 5 minutes of going to bed and would be shouting for me to come and put it back on! Haven't got time for that! 🤣

DD is 2 and currently in a summer weight sleeping bag plus a blanket.

She initially kicked the blanket off almost immediately and also turned around in the bed a lot, but she is now much more used to the blanket and staying with her head at the right end.

Idea is to phase out the sleeping bag during the year as the weather improves and then go full duvet in autumn.

So, do you have a 20 month old toddler son, or a baby girl who you'd potentially like to share the same surname as her older sister? Your posts don't add up.

He's fine in a sleeping bag for ages yet if it works for him and for you. That said, how is he kicking it off? Is he unfastening it and taking it off?

sexnotgenders · 20/02/2024 09:51

There's no age you are 'meant' to do anything. My 3 year old DD is still happily in her sleeping bag. If he still fits in his bag and is happy, why would you change it? My DD is getting too big for hers now, so we're aiming to move her over to a duvet in the summer when it's warmer and less of a concern if she kicks it off (and then hoping she has settled into using it properly by the time winter comes round again). If that doesn't work, we'll just buy bigger sleeping bags instead, possibly the footless ones

My son turns 3 next month and is still in a sleeping bag, he's always been happy in them and slept through the night so never dared change it. He's only just figured out in the last few weeks how to get out of it.

When it stops working for you.

My daughter learnt to escape them and sleepsuits at 18 months so we stopped them.

She's 3.5 and not great at keeping a duvet on so we have a heater in her room so it's stays warm overnight without boiling us. She also has a heated under blanket. She is generally better if the duvet isn't touching her so we prop the duvet up like a tent on the side of the bed that is there to stop her thrashing the wallpaper in the night so it's over her but not as heavy.

She has two layers on at bed time usually a t-shirt and long sleeved pj top and if very cold thin leggings under her pj trousers. We try to use poppered vest still but she's not a fan of them being poppered any more

Steppee sleeping bag, it's like a bag but with feet

Turn it backwards so the zip is at the back… then they can’t get out

Surely she could have both?! What a weird thing to pick up on!

DS is almost 2.5 and still in a sleeping bag, we use a mixture of the ones with legs in and the standard ones, no plans to move him onto a duvet anytime soon. Sorry to jump on but for those still using bags at this age are you using pillows or not? DS doesn't have a pillow, just goes in his cot with his bag on. Always slept like a dream, but should I be using a pillow now for him?

InTheRainOnATrain · 20/02/2024 11:04

2 is fine for a sleeping bag. They just become problematic once DC is potty trained and it limits the ability to dash for a quick wee upon waking. So with that in mind I’d transition to a duvet over a summer, because most kids train at 2.5-3 and it’s far easier to swap when it’s hot and they don’t need the covers to stay warm.

AegonT · 20/02/2024 14:03

We stuck with sleep sacks till age three when we turned the cot into a toddler bed.

Sunnydaysaregone · 20/02/2024 14:14

One of my grandchildren was an escapologist as a toddler. Around 16 months he managed to climb over the side of the cot while still in his gro bag, fortunately without hurting himself. I heard the noise and went to investigate and found him upright and shuffling in little steps across the room in the bag looking very pleased with himself. So that was the end of the sleeping bags for him. He did go on to be very successful at the sack race on school sports days 😆
