How to introduce peanut butter to baby?

Hello mums, this must have been done by most people but as FTM I'm still nervous about how to do it correctly... so baby is turning 6 months old this weekend. We've been giving him some puree over the last few days with mixed results (sweet potato yes, kidney beans nay). I'm thinking about moving on to try out peanut in the form of smoothie peanut butter. We don't have family history of allergies and baby doesn't have any eczema etc so far. Shall I try a bit thinned with milk on his lips? Mouth? Skin? And watch for ten minutes? What if there is a reaction? Thanks!

I can't remember when I gave my child peanut butter for the first time, I didn't do anything special just gave it him

AntiStuff · 13/02/2024 14:24

Can't remember, but I don't think it was one of the first foods I used for weaning. Probably gave her banana and pb on toast at some point. Didn't actually think about it tbh.

Why do you want to introduce it so soon?

I don't eat it so I don't think I ever gave it to mine when they were younger it's just not on my radar.

As a dip with fruit like apple, or in sandwiches once he got a bit bigger.

Thinly spread on toast, then cut into fingers. Easy peasy.

We did a tiny amount to suck off the tip of our fingers then kept an eye on him. It was one of the first things we gave him.

I warmed it up to make it smoother/liquify if thst makes sense and gave him a taste from the spoon.

Put it on toast, when he was a bit older though. Its just wasn't one of the first things I thought about giving him

Probably a few days into weaning at just turned 6 months for both of mine. Just a thin layer on toast. My 2yr old loves it, has it on toast, in yogurt etc. She loves it & it's so healthy. I can't stand it

Sounds like a good plan. The advice is just don’t give huge globs of it as it’s claggy and could block the throat. Look for any rashes. I’d check nhs website for allergy info obviously if any tongue swelling or trouble breathing that’s an emergency but very unlikely.

I added small amounts of smooth peanut butter into other foods so it was thinned and diluted, then graduated to spread thinly on toast.

Good luck!

I gave it to my DD at about 6-7 months. I gave a small amount mixed in with yoghurt. The next time I gave a little bit more with yoghurt.

I like to start it early because it’s a useful source of nutrients and it goes great with the breakfast foods we like - banana, cereal, yoghurt etc. Nothing wrong with giving it at 6 months.

Thank you all for the replies! Yes I was reading somewhere that it's good to give it early to reduce risk of allergy. Fingers crossed but I guess if any reaction I'll just call 999?
