My ds is 3 and still no closer to talking. He does say words but not many. Hearing is fine and under SaLT. Just looking for some reassurance and hope, when did your speech delayed toddler speak and was it sudden or gradual?

Three almost exactly. If your LO is 3 are they getting any more support than just SLT?

@CadyEastman my ds got referred at 2 and has only had 3 sessions half a year ago. I've got private sessions booked in now

3 and a half, both of them.
They very quickly had age typical speech, although one is autistic and had some autistic speech patterns.
Both now grunty teenagers. They excel at writing and chat non stop (and very loudly) with friends.

My dd was 3.5 and it was a sudden torent of speech. My 17 year old ds was 4.5 and just a few new words a week.he was privately diagnosed with a severe language disorder at 6.5 so a language disorder if life long. You'd never know if you talked to him ( he didn't grow out of it but therapy has worked).

I also have a son who was still totally non verbal at 7. He first word was actually a wonderful, cutting insult in a whole sentence. He also has a language disorder but is fully understandable now. His speech sounds aren't all perfect.

3 is still young. Hopefully yhey will be like my dd. You'd never guess she had a severe delay at 3.5. She has no language disorders

I didn't say a word until I was 5, DS was under salt until 7. DD is under salt now at 3. The fact he can say some words is really encouraging, he will get there

When you say his hearing is fine, how has it been tested? Was it a proper audiologist?

My DSs both had speech delays but in different ways. DS2 would speak a lot, endlessly but it was completely incomprehensible. That slowly got better with regular speech therapy, he was probably 5 before he could be mostly understood by most people and still working on some of his letter and word sound combinations at 9.

DS1 never babbled, had very little speech, maybe 10 words at 2.5. He had significant receptive as well as expressive speech delays, 18+ months at 4 years old. We did see a speech therapist before that point and they gave us some strategies to work on, but they said given his complete inability to concentrate at 3 we should come back once he was over 4. He started regular speech therapy, fortnightly at 4.5 then weekly at 5, finished weekly speech therapy at 8. He was probably 6 before he could have a real conversation. The receptive speech delays played a big part in that. Receptive speech is how much they understand of what people are saying and includes things like at 4 being able to follow instructions for 3 consecutive things to do. His receptive is normal now too.

One of my friends kids basically said no words but started speaking in full sentences at 3.5. Her father was the same as a child. It can be hard at thus age to know what the issue really is.

My granddaughter's 'speech' was just incomprehensible babble at nearly 3.
I offered to fund private speech therapy, as at that point it was causing issues with her socialisation (other children wouldn't engage with her because her babble was disconcerting for them). Her progress was really fast, and within a few months, she was talking well. I think she was discharged at 3.5 years old.

lovemetomybones · 24/10/2024 23:35

I'm in your situation op. My 3 yrold has a few words and sounds only. He seems to have a processing ability for 5 words, any new words replace older words which he never says again. He has global delay and suspected autism. The neurologist I saw said 5 is the age in which speech will be more likely to occur.

Is there any update @tiredmumofboys1? Wink

How do they do on this simple progress checker? Wink

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/10/2024 08:09

My near 4 yr old properly started taking about 6 months ago- struggles with specific sounds but it was such a relief because it was silence or babble for nearly all of the 2s.
