What does your routine look like if your toddler sleeps well?

My 19 month old used to be a brilliant sleeper but pretty much since she started nursery at 12 months we’ve had a run of teething and illnesses that have disturbed her sleep. However even after a rare 2 weeks without illness her sleep is still crap with multiple wake ups. It’s making her grumpy and taking its toll on us as we both work. I wonder if shes sleeping too much during the day or too late or if there’s something we can change in her routine to improve night time sleep. At home she has an early nap, usuyat least 2hr (12-2pm). At nursery (4 days a week) she sleeps less but the nap starts and end later (eg 1:30-2:45pm). Should try capping her daytime nap?

If you have a toddler of similar age who sleeps well what does your routine look like?

At 19 months my son was down to one nap from 12-2 every day. He'd get up at 7 and be in childcare from 8.30 to 4.30 every weekday. Bedtime routine started (and still does aged 3) at 7pm.

He didn't drop that midday nap until 2.5.

My 22 month DS sleeps from 7pm - 7am.
Naps from 12:45 - 2:30 at home (used to be 12:30 - 2:30 but he's getting sleepy a bit later now).
On a nursery day he naps for less time as he gets FOMO so I think he catches up on sleep when he's at home.
Bath, teeth & pyjamas from 18:15 - 18:45, quiet book reading / cuddles upstairs from 18:45 - 19:00 and then bedtime book, song and into cot at 19:00 with lights out. He either falls asleep straight away or sings songs to himself for up to 30 mins before falling asleep.
If he's not acting tired in the evening or woke from his nap too late we push the bedtime routine forwards by 15 mins so he gets put into bed at 19:15.

2.5 yr old here who still has a 1.5 hour nap and doesn't show any signs of dropping it soon. Sleeps 7.30 - 6.30 overnight. She's pretty consistent so long as she's not ill. From my experience there have been a few times I thought she was ready to drop the nap as she refused a few days etc, but after a week or so she'd go back to her normal routine. The disruption starting nursery is totally normal. It took us 6 months+ to get over that but she started at 6 months so it was a while ago now!

Son wakes up around 6:30-7:30am. Nap is between 1-3:30pm (usually two hours but sometimes the whole two and a half). We run the bath at 6:45 and he is usually in until about 7:10. Then he gets ready for bed (nappy, pyjamas, teeth cleaned) and we read stories for about 15-20 minutes. We're usually back downstairs by about 7:30-7:45 and he rolls around chatting and drifting off for about half an hour (but can be up to an hour, he isn't upset but chatting to himself or playing).

Edit: son is 2 and a half, but has been in this routine since he was about 18 months.

Have a 19 month old who sleeps through 99% of the time - she's a better sleeper than my 3 year old. Routine is:

  • wake between 6 and 6:45
- early afternoon nap, at home typically 12:30 - 1:45, at nursery typically 1:30 - 2:15 (so she naps less at nursery - bedtime routine starting from 7 pm, finishing about 7:45

Granted my older one had pretty much the same routine at this age and rarely slept through! Didn't start sleeping through reliably till a little after two years. I think a lot of it comes down to the child's personality and luck.

2 and a bit, wakes up around 7
Naps 40m-2h anywhere from 11.30-3.00
In bed by half 8
