A 2 year old needs a sleep bag or a toddler duvet

PeopleAreWeird · 11/02/2024 05:47

Max 4 tog!

Why would you give a 10.5tog?
Thats dangerous

10.5 tog does seem very heavy. 2YOs are more prone to overheating than 3+ but I did think that’s it’s less of an in a single bed, because they can chuck it off easily if too hot versus in a cot because there’s nowhere for the duvet to go? At home my 2YO has a 7 tog on his single bed in winter (4 tog in summer) and that seems about right for him, he started waking cold in around October with the 4 tog even dressed in long PJs + vest, but it’s not something I give any thought to if we stay over in a hotel or at a relative’s house.

Seems a bit thick, mine had a 7 in winter at that age, though I think the recommended is a 4 (our house is cold). I'd go with thinner quilt with vest and warmer pj's if they're getting cold.

SnowsFalling · 11/02/2024 07:06

It's quite heavy. I'd put a thinner duvet on, and see how they go.
Sme kids run hotter thanothers tho. My youngest (at secondary school) didn't ask for his summer 1.5tog duvet to be upgraded to his 4 tog until that freezing week earlier this year... the rest of us are on 10.5 tog!

I have a four year old who’s been in a king bed since two. He has an 8 tog and a lighter one in the summer. He’s always been more than capable of kicking his quilt off.

My youngest is in a toddler bed - so has a thinner quilt. Again, he can (and does) move the covers as he spends half the night in our bed!

They shouldn’t be in sleeping bags if they can climb out.

CauleyMacGlochlin · 11/02/2024 08:04

At 2 they need a toddler duvet, a warm enough room and dressed accordingly. It's cold here so mine has a vest under his pyjamas and warm socks on.

If your child is still kicking off the duvet too much then keep them in sleeping bags for now.

Flossflower · 11/02/2024 08:53

I am fairly sure 4 tog is the maximum. I recently looked this up as I bought a bed for my grandchild child that moved out of a cot.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2024 09:00

10.5tog is ok for a single bed
4.5tog max for a toddler bed.
Something about the size of the child relative to the size of the bed.

My 2 teens still have their 4.5tog on their beds. Try the lighter one and if they are cold/your house is cold you can always use a heavier one or add a blanket

mitogoshi · 11/02/2024 09:17

It's what mine had once they went into single beds, it's a standard duvet weight in the U.K. never heard of using a sleeping bag except for camping, they need to be able to get out for the toilet by then.

mitogoshi · 11/02/2024 09:20

Do you all heat your homes at night then? I never have we all have 10.5 in winter, 4.5 in cupboard in case of hot weather, they toggle together to make a thick winter one but it never gets cold enough here.

Of course it gets colder in certain parts of the country. Our thermostat is in our toddler's room and set to 19. It feels bitterly cold through the night otherwise. In the day time we're up and active so 17/18 is fine. We also have a log burner. We live in Scotland.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2024 09:38

Our heating is off overnight (also in Scotland). 18/19⁰C for the thermostat during the day but only am and pm unless we feel cold during the day.

4.5tog summer and 10.5tog in winter. Dd and ds have chosen to stay with 4.5tog the last couple of years though.

I haven't given a 10.5 tog just asking a question
