Babies silent reflux is getting worst, help please!

My baby is nearly 6 weeks old, and from birth, we have faced numerous issues with his breathing! After being in and out of hospital several times, we got told it was silent reflux, and prescribed infant Gaviscon & Carobel. Neither worked for him, the Carobel gave him loose nappies, and the infant Gaviscon doesn’t seem to have any affect.

The doctor prescribed Aptamil Pepti 1 as he developed a rash suspected CMPA and he is also taking a small dosage of Omeprazole prescribed by the doctor, but since switching to Pepti 1, the bottle is so thin, and has made the reflux even worst, to the point he stops breathing in his sleep, startles and then begins breathing again. Has anyone else experienced this? The Carobel worked wonders, but due to it giving him loose nappies, we had to stop. Is there any alternatives out there? We are at our wits end, and just want to help our little one 😔

It's been 15 years since my DD had this, but she had a cocktail of domperidone (moves the food through the body faster), omeprazole (reduces acid production) and infant gaviscon (thickens the milk in the stomach).

During the day, I carried her in a soft sling pretty much all the time. Held her upright for 30 minutes after feeding. And when she was put down to sleep, the crib was raised at one end as much as possible, and she was on her side wedged in with rolled towels so she couldn't flip over.

We had the same problem!
We tried aptimil anti-reflux milk..
Then he was sicking up so we changed to cow & gate anti reflux and it worked like a treat.
Worth a try!

Sorry sent way too soon!

Congratulations on the birth of your son! Secondly, I hope you're ok.

I've been where you are, albeit 3 years ago. We had a pretty rough ride with reflux and my daughter still has reflux now but it's manageable and doesn't disrupt life like it used to.

I never quite found anything which worked that well. The best we had was Infant Gaviscon at the max dose coupled with liquid Omeprazole.

Liquid Omeprazole used to be super pricey so I was lucky that my GP prescribed it given how much we got through.

We had a wedge cushion which allowed my daughter to lie at an angle with her head higher up.

I tried lots of different things and found Dr Brown bottles were the best at reducing reflux as much as possible (with the green things in them) and I ditched the milk machine early on. Stirring the bottles rather than shaking.

I got the reflux lady's book and joined FB groups to do with reducing reflux as much as possible.

I can send you the book if you feel comfortable DM ing me your address.

Most of the medical world rely on babies outgrowing reflux ... this doesn't help those of us living it.

Seriously, I hope you're ok. By week 7 I had a bit of a breakdown with my friends. I was exclusively pumping as I convinced myself my baby didn't like breastfeeding and I had a not quite 2 year old who hadn't responded well to becoming a sister. Something had to give! I felt so shit at this point and my friends helped me to see that I needed to make my life easier somehow.

Omeprazole made life more manageable - perhaps speak to your GP about increasing the dosage? Xx

We had this, the answer was to swap to antireflux formula which is much thicker. LO took omeprazle until 12 months.

Wishing you luck x

Oh op it’s so hard. We had major reflux here at the start. Our baby lost a lot of weight early on and was being weighed constantly. She has improved greatly with infacol thank goodness. I can’t really offer better advice than all of the above, but I will say, it’s very very worrying and distressing! You have my sympathies! And I hope you find something that works.
