Nearly 4- sudden accidents

My nearly 4 year old keeps having accidents. This is new so took him to GP and was given antibiotics for an infection. Since then accidents are less frequent but more frequent than they used to be. Tonight he both wet and soiled himself. I'm going to call the GP tomorrow but just wanted thoughts I guess. I can't help thinking of that thread where the boy couldn't get an appointment for 2 weeks. Am I just being overanxious?

Are the accidents at night when he is asleep or whilst he’s awake? Sometimes children of this age get so involved in what they are doing that they miss the cues and ‘forget’ to go to the loo. At 3 years old I wouldn’t be too concerned about the odd accident. My son was dry in the day at that age but still had a pull up overnight till nearly 5.

Thanks @IncognitoUsername this is during the day. He's still in pull ups at night. It's just that he hasn't soiled himself in over a year and he didn't seem to realise he'd done it. Dunno, I'm probably overthinking but it's just that it's a change

Constipation can cause this.

Not to ask for tmi, but consider the consistency.... normal?

My 3yo had sudden poo accident this week. Turns out he has worms...

PurBal · 08/02/2024 20:12

Smelly and sticky poo can be a sign of overflow and constipation. Is he drinking enough (8 cups a day of whatever the amount is for his age)?

ERIC may help.

alwaysonadiet1 · 08/02/2024 20:12

It could be that his bladder is still irritated from the infection. How long ago was the course of antibiotics? Did they take a urine sample to culture?

Unfcukmylife · 08/02/2024 20:18

Oh thanks all...

So, consistency was ok but maybe a bit pale? Antibiotics was about 10 days but I wonder if I kept it going too long (I just finished the bottle).
I don't know about taking it to culture. The GP said he was sending it for testing- is that the same thing?
He probably doesn't drink enough tbf

I appreciate you taking the time to answer

Also think about foods he ate that he doesn't usually eat.

Sometimes say if they eat a load and unusual large amount of veg or fruit, it might just be too much!

A long shot, but has there been any major upset in the house / family recently?

Unfcukmylife · 08/02/2024 20:24

@Lucy377 thank you. I've been out of the house quite a bit. I normally do drop off and pick up but it's been dad mostly this week...

Just noticed if it happens when you come back after being away. Esp if there is high emotion attached to you being unexpectedly out of the house.

Children sometimes unconsciously 'regress' to a younger age to show they need their Mummy still. Or to show they are struggling and need a bit more support.

Just up the reassurance about your own safety and whereabouts.
You may have to baby him a little bit more for a little bit, go back doing a bedtime story, that sort of thing.

alwaysonadiet1 · 10/02/2024 08:31

I would also check with the gp that he has had the correct antibiotics. Some strains of bacteria which cause utis are resistant to the general antibiotics and need specific one. They tested the urine so would hope they would have spotted this if it was a problem but just in case...

Unfcukmylife · 25/02/2024 12:56

So it might be that there was no urine infection and it might be thrush! Just thought I'd update incase it helped anyone with similar
