How much does your almost 3 year old sleep?

Just wondering how much sleep is to much/to little. Also do you wake you toddlers after their afternoon nap or will they naturally wake.
my ds is 3 in April he sleeps relatively well at night and will nap most days. If we are out on the car etc he wakes fine. But if he’s napping in the house he seems to go off to sleep but hates waking. We have to wake him we give him around 2 hours. He will wake and is grumpy for a bit and then fine. But just wondering when you need to think a toddler is too sleepy?
he sleeps at night from around 7.30 until 6/7 on average. But getting later.

Sorry I'm not sure what your issue is exactly? You have a nearly 3yr old that still has a 2hr nap and will then go to bed at 7.30pm and sleep for a further 11-12hrs. Sounds amazing.
Both my children dropped their naps by 2.5yrs as it would impact their bedtime. Most of my friends kids are the same. You sound like you're on to a winner.

VivaVivaa · 08/02/2024 20:31

Mine was long done with napping by 2 y 10 months. He’d sleep 11.5- 13h overnight.

InTheRainOnATrain · 08/02/2024 20:32

7-6.30ish overnight. Doesn’t nap daily but on a busy day will have an hour. Sometimes skips the post lunch nap only to danger nap on the school later and is then woken ASAP and is grumpy AF. Think we’re riding through a transition. His sister did 7-7 overnight and a 2 hour nap until nearly 4! They’re all different.

Your toddler sounds like mine. She goes to bed between 8-9pm. I would like it to be earlier but my husband does the bedtime routine. I can only push him to do it earlier so much, and I don’t think she would sleep earlier anyway. I wake her before 7am during the week but let her sleep in at weekends. She fights nap/bedtime a lot, but she’ll fall asleep regardless if we don’t give her a nap. If she sleeps in the cot, that could be her for 2-3 hours, but we’ll wake her if it gets too late.

Thanks for the reply @InTheRainOnATrain @Sahlife @Tangled123 @VivaVivaa

it is great but he’s gone through a time prior to recently where he seemed to be managing just fine after refusing his naps he’d still go to bed at 7 and sleep. He’s been unwell for the last two weeks (hosp admission to) and he’s started wanting the naps again which is fine. I’m just worried because he hasn’t been well.. I thought he was dropping the nap but now he’s sleeping for longer. Should I be worried.

At that age my daughter was having a 1-2h nap 3 times a week. On a day without a nap she went to sleep at 7.30 waking 1-2 times through the night up for the day between 7 and 8. On a day with a nap she went to sleep around 8.30, waking 1-2 times a night and up for the day between 7 and 8.

By 3 she had a nap 1-2 times a week. Once mid week on our day off and sometimes one at the weekend. Same bed times and wake ups as before but had a reflux flare up at the time and was awake every 2h through the night and needed to be cuddled and held upright through out the night

InTheRainOnATrain · 09/02/2024 09:44

Oh mine will go through phases where he’ll nap 3 days in a row, then not again for a whole week! I think 3 is a big time developmentally so it’s not as linear as nap -> no nap in one go. And then there’s if they’ve been ill, had a really active day, spent more time outside, you have to do a long drive in the afternoon… I find it’s really variable! I don’t think I’d be worried so long as he was happy in himself and there’s plenty of energy when he’s wake. But do ask the doctor if you want a medical opinion- coming off the back of a hospital admission it’s normal to be more worried than usual.

Searching old threads for advice.

My DC is 3.5 years only sleeping for 10 hours a day. 7pm- 5am. Or 8pm to 6am. No naps. DC dropped the nap at 2.5 years old. DC is very active would jump on trampoline/ over furniture. We go for walks. DC also goes to nursery 3 days a week. Eats well and drinks enough water.

I also took them in car for a drive as that always (used to) gets them to sleep but they were active all through the drive so we came back.

I'm very worried. Should I speak to GP?

Hi @Maaofatoddler what is it that worries you?

Most toddlers have dropped their daytime naps by 3 so not napping during the day is completely normal

And his nighttime sleep sounds also within the normal range. M 2.5 and 4.5 year old sleep from 7.30ish to 6 so broadly in line with yours

If he's happy and active in the day then I wouldn't rock the boat.

5am is not an ideal wake time but most toddlers go through a phase of early waking at some point and most grow out of it

Cluelessfirstimer · 02/08/2024 21:05

26 month old DS - hardly naps anymore...! Bed at 7/8 sleeps for 12 hours usually.

On the rare occasion he does nap he naps for about 2 hrs and goes to bed a bit later on those days. Still sleeps about 12 hrs.

Icanttakethisanymore · 02/08/2024 21:07

My 3 yo has no nap and sleeps for about 10.5hrs a night.

Thank you.

The worry is that them not getting enough sleep. Maybe it could be due to early daylight..

My 3 yo has no nap and sleeps for about 10.5hrs a night.

Exactly so I am just wondering whether 10-11 hours is enough?

INeedARest22 · 02/08/2024 21:13

Your 3yo sleeps more than my 15mo and 2.5yo???

INeedARest22 · 02/08/2024 21:14

It depends on what his health is like? It's very hard to say without knowing what the hospital admission was and how active he is generally.

Edenmum2 · 02/08/2024 21:50

Mine is 2.5 and I cap her nap at 30 mins. She sleeps 8pm - between 7-8am. If I don't cap it she is simply not ready for bed and things go downhill so I would say for a 3 year old to still nap for 2 hours is unusual (based on my limited experience - but I do have lots of friends whose kids had dropped it altogether by 2.5)

Howeverrrrr....it must be lovely to be having 2 hours to yourself in the afternoon (and I never got that, my DD has always been a catnapper) and if they're sleeping well at night I really wouldn't rock the boat!

Well I’d love it if my LB slept more but he doesn’t 🤷‍♀️ he has ample opportunity to sleep and wakes up most days bright as a button. I’ve stopped stressing over it and accepted he just has quite low sleep needs.

skkyelark · 02/08/2024 22:47

10-11 hours is in the normal range – at the low end, but in it. Both of mine are low sleep needs, and we went for 8.00-6.00 or 6.30 as the least worst in terms of getting a bit of an evening without very, very early mornings. A plus of it is that we can all eat a family dinner and have a wee bit of time together even on nursery days.

Mrsmch123 · 03/08/2024 04:22

Mine has just turned 3, naps 1-3pm every day. Goes to bed at 8pm and asleep by 8:15. Gets up between 6:30 & 7.

BertieBotts · 03/08/2024 06:40

Hasn't had a daytime nap for ages. Other than a sneaky 5-10 mins in the car.

Usually sleeps about 11-12 hours at night.
