Possible ADHD / ASD or just a typical 5.5 year old?

DD age 5.5. In year 1

Does this sound like possible neurodivergence or just a typical 5 year old?

  • Bad behaviour at school, poor concentration, messes around
  • School have complained about her being unkind, but I find her very kind myself?!
  • Doesn’t respect authority, impossible to discipline as threats are meaningless to her, she will try and reason with you.
  • Appalling behaviour over Christmas, couldn’t cope with it all & lost the plot.
  • on track academically
  • Was an early talker, talked a lot and well from age 1
  • Always been social, confident but sometimes overly so!
  • Shows good potential at sport, loves swimming & cycling & very confident, eg super confident climbing at playgrounds
  • happy to go to new places, eg always been happy being left at nursery, holiday clubs, etc
  • lots of meltdowns at home, everything is hard work nothing is simple eg eating dinner will involve lots of moaning sometimes end in tears
  • Some sensory stuff, eg doesn’t like tight clothing
  • Gets very hot, hates being hot, in the summer misbehaves more at school and says the heat makes her stressed
  • Didn’t poo in the loo until age 5
  • obsessed with one soft toy she takes everywhere

probs adhd or autistic! Nothing to worry about!! My sister was similar and it was fine! You just got to understand them a bit more! Ask them how they feel and why. Try things they like such as: if they’re having a meltdown because they didn’t have their favourite snack say: look! I know it won’t be the same but how don’t we try something special! And if you don’t like it we will find something else!!

I don't actually know what "typical" looks like, but all very similar to DS1 who was diagnosed much later and DS2 who is on a waiting list for assessment now.

I haven't read it yet but I keep reading really good things about The Out of Sync Child, you might find it useful?
